Goal

The goal of this intervention is to increase reading fluency.

Materials

  1. Reading materials

    1. 7th grade passages

    2. 8th grade passages

    3. You can also use class reading materials/novels

  2. Stopwatch or timer

Intervention Steps

  1. Place reading material in front of student.

  2. Explain to the student that you want him/her to practice reading a passage.

  3. Ask the student to read out loud for one minute. At the end of the minute, mark the exact word where the student stopped.

  4. Tell the student how many words he/she read and clarify any words they struggled with.

  5. Ask the student to read the passage again and try to beat their previous score.

  6. Repeat Step 3 two more times for a total of three readings.

  7. After each reading, indicate the student's score and encourage them to improve on the next attempt.

Notes

  1. This could either be done one-on-one (teacher and student) or as a whole class (students in pairs).
