Frontloading vocabulary is a strategy to increase student reading and listening comprehension during content area lessons that may rely on specific, low-frequency words.

Frontloading just means to expose the student to the vocabulary words before they read any unit material and before the teacher engages in teaching the lesson.

Directions:

  1. Choose 5-8 key vocabulary words for an upcoming lesson/unit.

  2. Sit with a student or group of students for 5-10 minutes sometime before the new lesson begins to go over the words and their definitions.

  3. Use the worksheet below to ensure student understanding of the words.

  4. Allow students to keep and refer back to this list/worksheet as they engage with the material.
