Directions:
After giving whole group directions to the class, call the individual student over for a brief conference.
Discuss with the student what the task will look like when it is finished. Be sure to provide an exemplar or reference the exemplar you showed the class.
Ask the student to quickly draw a picture or jot down some notes that indicate what the task will look like when it is ALL DONE.
Ask the student to jot down a few words in the space at the bottom about how it will feel to have the task accomplished.
Send the student back to their desk to work independently. If a check-in is needed, reference the future sketch.
When the student is finished, reference the sketch and quickly discuss how they feel now that they accomplished the task.
Guiding questions for reflection:
How do you feel now that you go the task accomplished?
What did you tell yourself while you were working?
What will you do next time you have difficulty getting started on something?
Praise the student for any attempt at task initiation/any incremental progress! :)
