Goal

Increase reading comprehension by helping students organize and retain important information from text. This can be used in any content area or as a stand alone reading intervention.

Materials

  1. Text (could be from content area class or a new reading passage)

  2. Guide to 9 steps

  3. Optional comprehension questions for each passage

  3. If reading readworks.org passages, you can use their comprehension questions for each passage.

Intervention Steps

Introduction and Training

  1. Display summary writing guide with 9 steps on board and review each step with students

  2. Read passage aloud and model using summary writing guide

  3. Read another passage and have students fill in guide as you complete it on the board

  4. Have students use their answers to the 9 steps to generate summary of the passage

  5. Have students share summaries with pairs, give each other feedback, and make necessary revisions

  6. Continue practice sessions until students are proficient using the strategy

Implementation

  1. Have students use guide to write summaries in all classes. If material is being read by all students, have them work in pairs to get feedback on their summaries

  2. Gradually fade the use of the guide as an in-class activity
