Using the pre-submission checkpoint is a simple way to work directly with students to allow them to correct their work before submitting it for assessment. In this strategy, simply instruct the student to bring their work to you before they submit it, and then highlight the problems that they got incorrect. Then, give them time to go back and correct these problems. If a common mistake is made, the check-in is a great time to engage in quick reteaching of targeted skills. It also may encourage the student to engage in checking their own work before submission.

You may personalize this checkpoint based on student need and the activity. For example, you may ask them to check in with you each time they complete 5 problems before moving to the next 5. You may also just ask them to check in when the entire worksheet is complete.

To track progress using this simple intervention, you can monitor patterns or trends in the number of problems highlighted on worksheets. For example, if a student has half of their problems highlighted on a skill sheet on Monday, then on a new sheet a few days later, has only a few problems highlighted, you can be confident that they are mastering the skill to a greater degree.
