Time management: finding your inner clock and guessing correctly how long something will take.

Often, time management difficulties are due to challenges with time estimation (knowing how long something will take). Students under- or over-estimate how long a task will take.

Try:

  • During an independent work period, take a post it and ask the student to write down what they think they will get done in that time period. Then, at the end, check back with them to evaluate - were you right? Was it more or less? What could you do differently next time? This will help the student to develop their inner clock.

  • Try the time estimator tool below. Assist the student with identifying the task, estimating how long it will take, and reflecting on how long it actually took when it's complete. This could also be done on a post it or just written on the top of a worksheet/study guide.

Is the problem more with getting started? See task initiation for "ready-do-reflect" strategy.
