Thus word boxes are interventions for students who struggle with decoding or spelling and are designed to help build proficiency with the skill.

• Word Sorts: Categorize words based on sound or spelling patterns. This intervention improves phonemic awareness skills.

• Five Steps to Decode Complex Words: This intervention improves decoding skills by teaching students a five-step syllable segmentation strategy. The intervention is designed to increase decoding skills by increasing the accuracy with which students sound out multisyllabic words. Thus it is an acquisition intervention that should be accompanied with modeling and immediate corrective feedback.
