Falcons flocking back to the nest: Returning students

In elementary school, we were constantly asked; “What do you want to be when you grow up?” Most of us hadn’t figured it out then, but some of us knew where we wanted our lives to go from the start. That was not the case for a few of our former Falcons. “Going through high school, I never thought that I would be a teacher. I always loved English, but that didn’t mean I wanted to teach it,” says Ms. Baylee French, a student teacher who previously attended Galileo.

When you have an idea of your future, you don’t plan on it changing so quickly. Especially if you are already in a place that you feel secure and happy with. But maybe that change will be for the better. Mr. Carter knows that feeling all too well. “ I was enjoying myself working as a researcher in a lab, having a dandy time,” Carter states, “and Mr. Lancaster, the principal at the time, called me up and was like, 'Yo Carter, you have any interest in being a teacher?,' and I was like, 'Uh, I'm ok right now,' and he's like 'What if I can get you to come back to Galileo?' and I was like, 'Hmm. That does sound intriguing.” And now he is our IB Bio and Anatomy teacher.

Even though coming back to your high school as an adult may sound a bit weird at first, it will soon feel just as familiar as it did the last time. Mr. Rogers, Galileo’s college advisor says,  “One of the biggest differences between me being staff here and my time here as a student is the fact that it's really just the change of position for me. As a student, you see things from a certain perspective, and when you come back, you see everything behind the scenes.”

Coming back to your old school brings a sense of nostalgia that feeds your inner child. Plus, Galileo has a special touch that has its way of reeling you in.
