Super Mario Bros: They made a movie?

The Super Mario Bros. Movie was released on April 5, 2023. This movie was met with mixed reviews when it was released. There are many good things and bad things about this movie. This is a spoiler-free review of the movie so don't worry about that.

To start with the good things, the movie is very fun. The voice acting is good, which was a large concern when the trailer was released. Many people after hearing Chris Pratt’s voice for Mario felt he wasn't doing enough to sell himself as Mario. This however ended up not being a problem. Another good thing is the amount of callbacks and references that are made to past Nintendo products. If you aren't a Nintendo fan many of these references will however go over your head. Next, the movie is overall very fun and doesn't try to take itself so seriously. I think this decision to not take itself too seriously helps out the story.

Taking a look at the negatives there are a few issues that do not matter too much. The movie’s story is good, but if you go in expecting something amazing you will be disappointed. The story doesn't do anything too crazy to make it stand out. The most glaring issue of the story is the pacing, which is not remotely good. There are many scenes that should have gone on longer that are just breezed by and forgotten immediately. I think this hurt the movie's quality overall. The movie is also very short which can be good or bad depending on the person, but I believe that it would have benefitted from being a little longer to help invest yourself in the characters more.

I would say that the Mario Movie is very fun and worth a watch. It is short so you can fit it into your schedule better. Overall if you just want a fun time and don’t hold the movie to very high expectations you will enjoy it.
