Spotlight on Lighthouse School's Medical Center

We wanted to share with you some of the wonderful services and skills that the members of our Medical Services Team provide to all of the students here at Lighthouse School.  Our Medical Services Team is responsible for so much in the day-to-day well-being of everyone.  Acting as parent surrogates, our Medical Team provides nurturance, love and support to students who are not feeling well. They administer medications daily to students as needed.  They also provide assistance to those students requiring ADL services, which can include basic hygiene, hand-washing, showering, oral hygiene, among other things.   In addition, the team teaches the importance of independence and responsibility with regard to medication compliance for many of our students.  Also provided are medical screenings and Dental Clinics, which are very beneficial for the students and help them to realize that taking care of their physical self is so important to being healthy overall.  The Medical Team offers support for events and activities that take place within the program every day.  These can include the Lighthouse School Thanksgiving dinner tradition, Field Day as well as other special events such as Multi-Cultural Day.   We are so fortunate to have such a wonderful, caring and devoted Medical Team.  We are all the better and healthier for them.

End of Year Celebration Activities

Lighthouse School is pleased to announce the upcoming student celebrations:

Senior Week:  To celebrate the hard work put forth by our graduating Seniors, we have put together some activities for the students to enjoy throughout the week of June 5th.

Transition Ceremony:  A time when all staff, students as well as families, and special guests come together to honor and celebrate the hard work and success of those graduating as well as those moving on from Lighthouse School and beginning their next chapter.  We wish them all the best of luck and success in all of their future endeavors.

Field Day:  June 14th will be a fun-filled day for all the students.  There are many activities planned – from face painting, outside games, lunch consisting of hamburgers and hotdogs, and ice cream to finish the day.

Consent Forms

With the end of the school year approaching, we are planning ahead with our Consent Forms Process for the 2023-2024 school year.  Completing these forms annually ensures that we have the most up-to-date information for all of our students and families as well as the needed permissions to provide services and treatment.

Our hope is to have most of the forms completed during family visits this month, but we will once again have these forms available to fully complete and sign online if it is not possible to do so in person.  Our goal is to make these forms as easy as possible to complete.  You will be receiving an email with a link for the 2023-2024 School Year Consent Forms by June 1st.  If you have any questions or if you do not receive the link, please reach out to your Family Therapist.  As always, we appreciate all of your cooperation in completing this important and necessary paperwork.

   June

June's Theme of the Month: Family

During the month of June, our students will focus on Family. There are many ways of defining a family and what being a part of a family means. Families differ in terms of economic, cultural, social, and many other facets, but what every family has in common is that the people who call it a family are making clear that those people are important in some way to the person calling them their family. Your family can offer the support one needs to thrive.

Many students have not had positive family experiences. During this month, students will relive those experiences in a positive way and establish a sense of family and belonging.  June at Lighthouse School provides opportunities to allow students to experience end-of-the-year transitions in a positive manner with the family they have created at Lighthouse.

Philosophy Amplification Project:

"The Big Picture"

The sixth highlight of our Philosophy Amplification Project is “The Big Picture” station.  This station is located in the 300 Cluster hallway at Wellman Avenue and in the Art Room hallway at Mill Road. It is a large mosaic image made up of individual art pieces which create a whole picture.

How to use the Big Picture:

·       Which square stands out to you?  Why?

·      Focus on one square. Can you see from that one square what the whole picture is?

·       How does one small event or experience influence your life?

·       How are you similar/different from your family or classmates?

·       What one word describes your family/homeroom?

The Biodevelopmental components are Identity, Objectivity, Social Responsibility, Individuality, Spiritual Dimension, and IRA (Identify-Redefine-Amplify).

Summer Family Services

During each summer our Family Therapists continue their hard work. The team of therapists works to complete the consent forms for the upcoming school year. They meet with each family a minimum of twice over the summer and maintain communication between the monthly meetings. In addition to the monthly meetings, they develop goals for the upcoming school year for each family they work with. Please work with your therapist to schedule your summer visits, complete the consent forms and review the Family Service Plan.

Summer Activities

It is certainly hard to beleive that the 2022-2023 school year is coming to a close, but here we are these last days of June.  As we close the school year, we wanted to provide our students and famiilies with some tips and ideas of fun ways to stay active, keep busy and enjoy the Summer.  Please click on the links below for lots of fun ideas and activities within many of our Massachusetts and New Hampshire communities.

Summer Challenge

With the Summer break fast approaching, we wanted to reach out regarding the Summer Challenge materials that are being offered and will be sent home with the students.  Each year, we compile a selection of activities and tasks for the students to complete over the Summer as they wish.  Our hope is that these provide some structured activities to continue the skills the students worked so hard on during the year and to provide structured activities for families, should you choose to use them.

This year, we have a Summer Challenge choice grid and a Reading Challenge choice grid.  Students can choose to do all or some of the activities.  While this is meant to be a support and not a requirement, please send any completed activities or work in with your child in the Fall when we return, to redeem a reinforcer for all of their hard work done over the Summer.

We at Lighthouse School wish you all a safe, healthy, and happy Summer and look forward to seeing you in the Fall for the start of another wonderful school year!!!
