Bioeducation:
Bioeducational Theme of the Month: Tolerance
October's monthly theme is Tolerance. Tolerance can be defined as the willingness to accept feelings, habits or beliefs that are different from your own. When we practice tolerance, we show an openness and respect for the differences that exist among people. In each of our lives, we come into contact with many people whose backgrounds, experiences, beliefs and values may be different from our own. In order to be successful in this diverse world, we must learn to be able to understand, appreciate and work with others.
Throughout the month of October, our staff will be highlighting Tolerance in different ways on lessons. We want to help our students understand the importance of being open to others' differences and how this in turn can create more opportunities for them across all aspects of their life. It is important to remember that tolerance does not mean accepting negative, harmful or inappropriate behavior. We want to model for our students what tolerance means: everyone deserves to be treated with respect and they should receive respect in return. Our students and staff represent a highly diverse population and we want to instill the value of tolerance in our Lighthouse community, while helping our students internalize that they are worthy of acceptance as well.
You can find read-aloud books with the theme of tolerance to share with your child by clicking any of these links:
Technology Corner:
The Eyes Have It!
The online classroom, the remote work station, Zoom, and Google Meet -- they all have one thing in common. They require us to stare at a computer screen for prolonged periods.
There are a number of things you can do to ease that eye strain, from simply adjusting the layout of your desk, to taking breaks, and adjusting the ambient lighting.
Mr. T's Tech Tips!
The Internet is a wonderful thing in some respects. In this time of social distancing, it is an absolutely essential tool for many people. But browsing the internet can have pitfalls!
In this issue, our resident Information Technologies expert, Mr. Toce teaches us how to browse the Internet with a little more SAFETY!

SPOTLIGHT ON:
REINFORCEMENT
During the summer of 2020, considerable time and resources went into developing expanded Student Motivation Systems. These systems, along with other treatment interventions, were put in place to help students be successful in the challenging world of remote learning. Some systems are established and proven, with modifications geared toward remote learning. Others are new and creative ways to further motivate students. Some examples of our more robust motivation system include Virtual Tokens and Student Cards. We also have recently established Staff /Student virtual Special lunches (see below)
"AMPazon" is our school store, where students can shop with their Tokens via an on-line catalogue. We are also looking to launch New Clubs and Activities as the year progresses. Be it Remote, Hybrid or back in the building together, we are motivated to keep our kids motivated. Our Goal is to continue to have our students' day as fun and exciting as a typical Lighthouse school day would be.

Special Lunches
Our ever popular "Special Lunches" have resumed, even as we face the complications of doing things remotely. Kids can now sign up on AMPazon to join their favorite staff in a virtual Special Lunch. Many staff are just as excited about this as the kids that have been requesting the return of this time spent "together". Most Mondays, Wednesdays, and Friday's at 12:30pm, students can join pre-designated staff for some social time. Special Lunches are open to students in all clusters, with two staff assigned to each "side "of the building: 300 and 400 clusters meeting as one group, 100 and 200 clusters meeting as another group. So encourage your child to check out AMPazon for the latest, up to date information on who's who at lunchtime! Their friends and staff are waiting to see them.
