A Message from Emily Hack, Director of Program Development:

You have heard it many times: at Lighthouse we are a treatment center AND a school. This has remained constant even during this challenging time of remote services due to the pandemic. We are working hard to create and foster a sense of normalcy and a strong interpersonal experience – helping our kids feel like we’re all together, even though we’re apart. We greatly value the partnerships we have with all of you, without whom it simply won’t work. We appreciate the efforts you make to help your children participate in their learning each day, the encouragement you provide, and the times you reach out to us when you need help. We are truly in this together!

We are so pleased to offer a full day of school 5 days a week. This features high quality, engaging, Biodevelopmental experiences during full blocks of formal instruction, Individual and Group Therapies, Health and Wellness, Occupational Therapy, Speech and Language Therapy, and Activities of Daily Living.

We also have designated times for additional academic support and tutorial sessions, as well as embedded therapeutic opportunities throughout the day. In every Google classroom students will find fun, engaging lessons and activities that can be accessed at any time. This robust programming provides a “full day in a new way”. Whether remote or onsite, there is full access to staff, support during tough times, opportunities to socialize with friends, all occurring in a context of acceptance and mutual investment.

Although we prefer to be together in the building, we are proud of our students for their continued investment in their education: attending lessons, completing work, reaching out for support, and taking advantage of motivational assistance. This year has certainly presented many challenges for us all, and once again, we’d like to thank you for being our partners in fostering not just school success, but also life success. We could not make this work without you!

Good Question! The Department of Secondary Education has worked with community partners to create a series of short videos in response to common questions about teaching and learning, safety, and well-being during the COVID-19 pandemic. Parents and others can go to the Good Question! page and click on the questions they are interested in to watch a short video reply. Videos will be added on a rolling basis.

"Thanksgiving Leftovers" Soup

Looking for a new way to use your Thanksgiving leftovers? We found a fun recipe to share. We wish you all a safe, healthy Thanksgiving holiday with your families and loved ones.

Ingredients:

  • 1 leftover turkey carcass

  • 3 medium onions, chopped

  • 2 large carrots, diced

  • 2 celery ribs, diced

  • 1 cup butter, cubed

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour

  • 2 cups half-and-half cream

  • 1 cup uncooked long grain rice

  • 2 teaspoons salt

  • 3/4 teaspoon pepper

Directions:

  1. Place turkey carcass in a soup kettle or Dutch oven and cover with water. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat; cover and simmer for 1 hour. Remove carcass; cool. Set aside 3 qt. broth. Remove turkey from bones and cut into bite-size pieces; set aside.

  2. In a soup kettle or Dutch oven, saute the onions, carrots and celery in butter until tender. Reduce heat; stir in flour until blended. Gradually add 1 qt. of reserved broth. Bring to a boil; cook and stir for 2 minutes or until thickened.

  3. Add cream, rice, salt, pepper, remaining broth, and leftover turkey. (If you have additional leftover vegetables, you can add those as well). Reduce heat; cover and simmer for 30-35 minutes or until rice is tender.
