“Every worthwhile accomplishment, big or little, has its stages of drudgery and triumph: a beginning, a struggle, and a victory.” -Mahatma Gandhi

We did it together!

As we approach the end of the school year and prepare for summer we would like to thank all of our Lighthouse families for your commitment, partnership, and resolve in conquering the greatest of challenges in this very unique year. From beginning the year with robust remote services to our gradual phased-in approach to on-site services. Together we were able to overcome difficult obstacles and safely provide our children with treatment and educational opportunities that fostered bioeducational advancement. Through our collaborative approach, each of your children, our students, gained a valuable understanding of the power of our collective teamwork.

Unlike last year at this time, we have a clearer understanding of what to look forward to going into the next school year. Our goal will be to look forward to welcoming all students back to full on-site services.

Have a safe and healthy summer!

Bioeducational Theme of the Month: Character

During the month of June, students explored the bioeducational theme of Character. Character is a representation of our values, which in turn come from the beliefs we hold. One's character can be shaped and developed over time. Therefore, it is our goal at Lighthouse to foster positive character traits in our students, such as independence, perseverance, respect, responsibility and understanding. While we teach and model good character throughout the year, over the month of June we highlighted Character more directly as our focus in Group and Individual Therapy, as well as academic subject areas. Activities and lessons included games such as B-I-N-G-O to help introduce the theme to some of our younger students who are just beginning to understand the basics of character and character traits. Students also created personal puzzles with each piece describing a trait they have, and/or developed self-portraits using music. In addition, on academic lessons, they read books with the theme of character and then reflected on what they read, and participated in discussions about historic figures and their character traits. The theme of Character was also woven into Physical Education classes, with an opportunity to reinforce and highlight the trait of character in regards to teamwork by keeping score of acts of good sportsmanship rather than focusing on the score of the game. As we head into the summer vacation, we encourage you to take the opportunity to explore the theme of character at home with your child. Included below are a few websites, books and movies that you may find helpful.

Transition Ceremony 2021

Lighthouse School celebrated another Transition Ceremony on Friday, June 11th, 2021, recognizing our graduating and transitioning students. In the spirit of keeping all safe and healthy, and in accordance with DESE guidelines, we were happy to be able to gather together live (with respect to social distancing) as well as through video conferencing. This allowed for the entire Lighthouse family to share in this special day. While this year's celebration was once again presented a little differently, it certainly did not detract from the hard work and accomplishments of our students.

Thank you to all of the families, guests, and viewers who joined us for our Transition Ceremony on June 11th.

Below, you can enjoy a tribute to our transitioning students and a video of the ceremony.

Summer Challenge: Being Safe,

Healthy & Engaged!

Each year, the summer is always bittersweet. We work so hard with the students throughout the school year that we know they earned summer vacation, but we are so sad to not see their smiling faces and remain connected over the summer weeks. One way we help students not only stay connected to Lighthouse but also connected to their learning and the hard work they put into their education all year, is through the Summer Challenge. The Summer Challenge is a series of activities for the students to engage in over the summer. They can choose to do some or all, but the focus is to have fun and maybe build some knowledge or experiences along the way. We welcome the students to bring their Summer Challenge packets into school the first week back to share their accomplishments and adventures throughout their summer. They also earn a small celebration when they return to school for participating in the Summer Challenge. We cannot wait to get these packets back and see and read all of the exciting things they experienced or tried!
