This is what article number 5 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights expresses about Torture, however, when it comes to everyday life, this human right is continually violated.
I chose this violation because It is heartbreaking to hear that that people are still subjected to agony in order to extract information from them or simply for the enjoyment of doing so; it cannot possibly be acceptable to violate a person's dignity in this method. What I find outrageous, verging on ridiculous, is that so many countries use national security as a justification to torture individuals, indeed they never acknowledge to employing violent techniques. When it comes to establishing precise statistics on the numbers of people subjected to Torture, it is impossible to collect datas since this is overwhelmingly a crime of darkness.
While I was doing some research on this violation, I found a lot of new pieces of information that I was not aware of and that shocked me , therefore I decided to dig deeper on situation in Tibet .
It is fundamental to know that China invaded Tibet in 1950 and Tibetans have lived under China’s military rule ever since. Even though Tibetans tried and still try numerously times to take back their country ,they are crushed with brutal force. Since the situation got worse , Tibetan’s leader, the Dalai Lama, was forced to flee across the mountains to India where he still lives today. China continues to insist that Tibetans are happy and prosperous, but won’t allow journalists, tourists or diplomats to see for themselves.
Having said that , as I happened to read further about this impressive situation I came across the story of Golog Jigme , a political prisoner that got arrested for helping to make a film with testimonies of Tibetans about the atrocities imposed by China. During his period in jail, he has been brutally tortured and even if today he is a free man, he still bears the signs not only physical but also psychological, of the tortures he suffered .
After each of his releases from prison , even though he was continuously monitored, he continued his activism and today he is is the most significant Tibetan activist to reach the West since the Tibetan Uprising in 2008.
