'The course of true love never did run smooth' once said Lysander, one of the main characters in the engaging comedy “A Midsummer night’s dream”. The idea of Shakespeare, expressed through Lysander’s voice, suggests what is in my opinion the main theme of this play: love’s difficulty. But if we dig deep into this wide concept, we will find out that there is actually a precise cause behind all the struggles of love: it is the complex issue of imbalance.
To give an example of this, it is sufficient to take in consideration the structure of the relationships between the four main characters, whose love situation is constantly unstable. When I first read this comedy, I immediately noticed the urgent need of balance of these characters: I instantly felt understood and irreparably drawn to this work of art.
In my view, the research of steadiness, not necessarily in our love life but surely in our every day life, is something we can all relate to. That is the main reason why I chose to deal with this play in particular. In addition to that, the lighthearted tone and the intrigues that characterise this play made me enjoy it even more.
To conclude, I would say that listening to my classmates' presentations also helped me expanding my knowledge regarding Shakespeare, particularly his accurate way of displaying current issues in his plays: that is, I learnt that Shakespeare's work are still topical.
