The European Union represents for me many invaluable principles, but I think that one more than others is vital for living peacefully in a community: it’s the possibility to have a single forum, a place where one tries to build a meaningful dialogue between countries.
The main goal of the forum is to create a good environment to express opinions about international topics, explain peacefully the point of view of every nation in order to avoid conflicts and to face problems.
We shouldn’t take the possibility to have a single international forum for granted, but most of the times we do: the European Union has grown up with the idea that together we’re stronger, and this is the main essence of the community. Cooperation between countries, especially during difficult periods is paramount; cooperate means thinking as if Europe is one single country and understand that what happens around us, not necessarily in our little nation, affects our daily life.
On the other hand, it is sometimes possible that cooperation can turn into intrusiveness: for example, there are some countries in the EU that are economically stronger than others, for this reason they impose decisions on the domestic policy of “weak” countries.
All in all, even if sometimes it can be hard to collaborate efficiently, I still think that being present and being helpful when the others need to is the thing that makes us European citizens.
To conclude, I would say that being part of the European Union literally means that we are unite in every situation, and that’s why we feel an indissoluble bond with the rest of Europe.
