EUROPE - A COMMUNITY FREE OF DISCRIMINATION
by Martina Bortolotti
The European Union has a clear goal: being able to provide a safe community where everyone feels accepted. That is why fighting discrimination is fundamental to create a society capable of making everyone feel at home.
One one hand, the EU is working extremely hard to put an end to discrimination. As a matter of fact, discriminating is illegal in European territories. Moreover, the European Commission funds plenty of non-governmental organizations fighting against racism, homophobia and gender inequality.
On the other hand, discrimination is unfortunately still a daily challenge for many people. Some people who have a different skin colour, sexual orientation or gender identity face discrimination every day. There are in fact people who have a closed mindset and keep having prejudices.
I see the EU is doing a lot to completely stop discrimination. However, from what I have personally seen, anyone who discriminates is often uneducated and misinformed. In my opinion, everyone should be educated about the issues that a huge part of the community is facing.
The European Union is a huge community where everyone should feel safe and at ease. Indeed, when I think about the EU, the first word that comes to mind is diversity. There are 27 countries in the European Union and each one of them has its own culture. Since there are so many different people, the EU is a perfect place to combat discrimination, which is sadly still a reality.
