My class and I were asked to reflect on drama and current issues that can be found in it.
Ever since we were kids we’ve always been used to talking and studying literature and its genres, including drama, a form of writing meant to be performed in front of an audience based on a story. We study authors, we read and we try to understand their works; but how important is drama nowadays?
In my opinion drama opens our minds: it helps us to concentrate, to develop our language, our communication skills, emotional intelligence, our creativity and to understand the world around us.
In addition, this fascinating literary genre makes us think about current issues, in the way to understand, appreciate and to solve them. In literature, especially in Shakespeare, we can extrapolate, from his works, too many issues which unfortunately are still present today: this confirms that many things in our society have not changed, indeed, in many cases, in my opinion, we have taken many steps backwards!
There would be plenty of issues to talk about such as illusion, suicide or manipulation, but I decided to take and analyse the inferiority of women, a very serious problem, unfortunately still present today, that immediately made me reflect.
Fist of all,I did some research on this issue: I found thateven today, unfortunately, women arein constant competition, seeking the approval of a male figure who sometimes does not appreciate the person in front of him enough.
Secondly, I chose a literary example to support my issue: “Measure for Measure” a problem play written by Shakespeare: reading between the lines of this amazing and brilliant work, it’s evident that the author wanted to highlight this issue, by putting women in a position evidently inferior to that of the man.
In conclusion I would say that this project made me reflect on this current issue that unfortunately is still present today: I’m pretty convinced that it is paramount that everyone realises that women are necessary and Drama or more in general literature is paramount for us!
