The European Union is an international organization including 27 European countries and governing common economic, social, and security policies. But what does the EU mean for me?
Firstly, I would say that I feel like I belong to the European Union: I don’t perceive it just like a political institution, but also as a part of my life. When I was born, the EU already existed, so I can easily identify myself as a European citizen.
Moreover, easily traveling abroad, seeing the study possibilities that the Erasmus project offers, knowing that several countries are united and discuss things with words instead of weapons are some of the reasons why I am glad to live here.
Obviously, the European Union also has its negative aspects: first of all, strict laws regarding commerce promote the sale of standardised products, which create difficulties for local companies. Then, other issues such as the management of immigration and a sort of cultural flattening are, in my opinion, significant flaws.
However, the EU is relatively young and it has time to correct those aspects: the EU is about Human Rights, pursuing Peace and Justice, and it has the aim to create a better world.
To conclude, I would say that the EU creates hope for a better future with new possibilities for citizens, but most importantly without conflicts...
