Modern Foreign Languages

On Thursday 1st December, our Year 9 students travelled to France for an overnight stay, develop international mindedness and to visit the Lille Christmas Market.

On Thursday, they visited a bakery where they learnt about the traditional process, in French, of making bread. Our students visited the popular Christmas Market in Lille where they bought souvenirs for their relatives and friends, followed by a meal at Flam’s to savour the popular ‘flammkuchen’.

On Friday, the students visited a local farm and then proceeded to buy some more souvenirs at Euralille, one of the largest hypermarkets in France. Finally, before returning to The Leigh Academy, the Year 9s also learnt about the different methods of waffle making - French and Belgium. Certainly there will be lots of opportunities to be reflective and fully absorb everything they have experienced and learned.

This was the first overseas trip that we have had in several years as the pandemic put a halt to our visits abroad and our intrepid inquirers certainly made the most of every opportunity to be open-minded communicators.

We were very happy to see how popular this cultural opportunity was as we want every single child to have the chance to experience cultural capital firsthand as well as boosting their confidence in the language that they will study in their GCSE.
