Curie College

Curie College Day

On Friday 9th December, students in Years 7-10 gathered as a community to celebrate Curie College Day. In honour of our namesake, we joined as a college to honour this pioneering woman who made such a significant contribution to the world of science. The day started with a communal assembly where students were reminded of the incredible life Marie Curie had led. From joining the Floating University, to being the first female winner of the Nobel Prize to discovering two new chemical elements, Marie Curie displayed the attributes we aim for Curie College students to embody every day: resilience, open mindedness and a desire to learn more and do more.

Following the assembly, each year group then took it in turns to join Mr Piggott and Mrs Grimes in the Lecture Theatre for their activity session. After having memories put to the test in a Marie Curie quiz, students were then set to work on a project designed to replicate the approach Marie Curie had to problem solving. Students were given a range of social issues- homelessness, poverty and global warming- and were tasked with working together to pitch a solution to fixing it. Using their skills as communicators, students worked hard to discuss potential solutions before utilising their abilities to be reflective and decide on one big pitch.

We were astounded at the range of ideas and creativity students displayed during this project work. From charity music concerts to mobile trucks handing out blankets, food and water, all year groups came up with something innovative and thoughtful. Once the judging has taken place, a winning group from each year will be decided and awarded a prize!

It was such a privilege to be able to celebrate Marie Curie in this way and we are looking forward to seeing what our amazing Curie students do next!
