Year 6 Open Evenings 2022

On Wednesday 5th October and Thursday 13th October, The Leigh Academy opened its doors wide to welcome Year 6 students from across Dartford and the surrounding areas, keen to see what the academy has to offer them for a secondary education.

Parents/carers and their children found themselves immersed in a range of activities and displays from a variety of subject areas, from the sweet smells of cooking in the food technology room, to exploring scientific experiments in our new state-of-the-art laboratories.

The Principal, Mrs Collins outlined how we 'Open Minds to Success' through the IB MYP programme and the IB learner profiles, which are the core of everything we strive to achieve, during talks in our Lecture Theatre.

Those who attended with their children were very complimentary of what they experienced:

'I was so impressed with The Leigh. All staff and students we encountered were lovely. Helpful and enthusiastic.'

'Came in with an open mind but left feeling convinced this is the school for my daughter and we have seen many! My daughter absolutely loved it! As a school, you have everything and it is all incredibly impressive. The staff and children are all extremely helpful and polite, you should all feel extremely proud! Thank you for a lovely evening.'

'The tour guides were excellent. Our daughter can be a little shy and they interacted with her in a way that involved her and didn't make her feel uncomfortable. This meant she really enjoyed the visit and speaks very highly of them both. She can see herself going to The Leigh. They also answered our questions really well too and were patient whilst we explored. It didn't feel rushed. It was great seeing how all the students and teachers interacted with one another. The atmosphere was brilliant.'

'We loved seeing the school even though our son is Year 8 as it’s the first walk around we have been to! Super impressed and everyone was so friendly and helpful! My son in Year 6 loved the school and felt really special walking around as everyone made an effort to talk to him.'

One of the areas that parents and students enjoyed spending time in, was the library. With a wide range of texts to choose from, the library is the one-stop shop for all things fiction and non-fiction.

During the evening, students could take part in the 'Who's Coming to Dinner?' competition where visual clues were given to students so that they could guess which characters, from famous texts, were joining the dining table.

Students were able to access the 'Book Doctor', a member of our Year 11 team, and have a book recommended to them based on their literary likings, guaranteed to cure all literary ills.

Students also enjoyed exploring The Leigh Virtual Library, surfinging through our range of online texts and audiobooks, meaning that with an internet connection, reading and listening can happen anywhere, at any time.
