Digital Citizenship Week: Helping Kids Build Healthy Tech Habits

This week is Digital Citizenship Week, and Red Hill is proud to be a Common Sense School. This means we are recognized for teaching students how to use technology in safe, smart, and respectful ways. Our teachers and Ms. Cornelius, our school librarian, lead digital citizenship lessons throughout the year to help students think about how they use technology in their daily lives—at school, at home, and with friends.

Learning to use technology safely and responsibly is a shared responsibility. At school, we focus on both digital safety and academic skills. At home, families can help by setting clear expectations about how and when to use technology. This might include turning off devices at bedtime, keeping phones away at the dinner table, or creating screen-free times during homework and family activities.

It also helps to have regular conversations with your child about the apps and games they use. The ACPS Family Field Guide is a helpful resource that offers questions families can ask to guide these conversations. Reviewing this guide together can help your family build strong, thoughtful habits with technology.

Semana de la Ciudadanía Digital: Ayudando a los niños a desarrollar hábitos tecnológicos saludables

Esta semana es la Semana de la Ciudadanía Digital, y Red Hill se enorgullece de ser una escuela Common Sense. Esto significa que estamos reconocidos por enseñar a los estudiantes a usar la tecnología de manera segura, inteligente y respetuosa. Nuestros maestros y la Sra. Cornelius, nuestra bibliotecaria escolar, imparten lecciones sobre ciudadanía digital durante todo el año para ayudar a los estudiantes a reflexionar sobre cómo usan la tecnología en su vida diaria: en la escuela, en casa y con sus amigos.

Cultivating "Deep Work" at Red Hill: a three part series

Part Three: How Families Can Strengthen Deep Work at Home

Deep work is a skill children build over time, and families have a big role in that growth. Begin with routines that echo school: set times for homework, play, and bedtime. Sleep is essential—without enough rest, attention and memory weaken.

Technology boundaries matter too. Devices and screens are part of our lives, but constant alerts and multitasking make deep work harder. Try silencing notifications during homework, and consider device-free periods before bed.

Also help children practice reflection: encourage them to think about when they felt focused or distracted, and talk together about what helps. With consistent routines, strong sleep habits, and mindful tech use, families give children a stable environment for growing their focus. When home and school work together, deep work becomes more possible, and students flourish.

Parte Tres: Cómo las Familias Pueden Fortalecer el Trabajo Profundo en Casa

El trabajo profundo es una habilidad que los niños desarrollan con el tiempo, y las familias tienen un papel importante en ese crecimiento. Comienza con rutinas que reflejen la escuela: establece horarios para las tareas, el juego y la hora de dormir. El sueño es esencial; sin suficiente descanso, la atención y la memoria se debilitan.

También son importantes los límites con la tecnología. Los dispositivos y las pantallas son parte de nuestras vidas, pero las alertas constantes y la multitarea dificultan el trabajo profundo. Staff Spotlight: Meet Ms. Winter!

Mrs. Winter is one of our amazing Reading Intervention Teachers at Red Hill. She’s been part of our school family for 3 years, helping students grow as readers and find joy in books.

Her journey into teaching was inspired by her mom, who was a preschool teacher. Now, Mrs. Winter is carrying on that love for learning in her own way. She says one of the best parts of Red Hill is how it feels like a close-knit family.

Outside of school, Mrs. Winter is a big reader—she’s in TWO book clubs! She loves so many books that it’s hard to pick just one favorite.

Here’s a fun fact: she’s married to a pilot but has never flown on a plane with him as the pilot!

Mrs. Winter’s perfect weekend includes a workout at Orange Theory, time with her family and dogs, and exploring fun places around town.

Destacando al Personal: ¡Conozca a Sra. Winter!

La Sra. Winter es una de nuestras increíbles maestras de intervención en lectura en Red Hill. Ha sido parte de nuestra familia escolar durante 3 años, ayudando a los estudiantes a crecer como lectores y a encontrar alegría en los libros.

Su camino hacia la enseñanza fue inspirado por su madre, quien fue maestra de preescolar. Ahora, la Sra. Winter continúa ese amor por el aprendizaje a su manera. Dice que una de las mejores cosas de Red Hill es que se siente como una familia unida.

Fuera de la escuela, a la Sra. Winter le encanta leer. ¡Participa en DOS clubes de lectura! Le gustan tantos libros que le cuesta elegir solo uno como favorito.

Un dato curioso: está casada con un piloto, ¡pero nunca ha volado en un avión con él como piloto!

El fin de semana perfecto para la Sra. Winter incluye hacer ejercicio en Orange Theory, pasar tiempo con su familia y perros, y explorar lugares divertidos en la ciudad.
