School Safety Week Update
This week is School Safety Week at Red Hill, and it has been a great success so far!
On Tuesday, we had both our Lockdown Drill and a visit from the North Garden Fire Department. Students did a wonderful job following directions during the drill. Afterward, firefighters joined us for lunch, and the children enjoyed having time to talk and eat with them.
Today, we practiced a Fire Drill. Everyone did a great job staying calm and safe.
Tomorrow, we will complete our final drill of the week: the Bus Evacuation Drill.
We invite all families to join us this Friday at 8:10 a.m. for our School-Wide Morning Meeting. After the meeting, stay for our Community Coffee Chat. The conversation will focus on school safety, and it will be a chance to hear directly from Ms. Gately and Mr. Osborn.

El martes, tuvimos nuestro simulacro de cierre de emergencia y una visita del Departamento de Bomberos de North Garden. This is article one of a three-part series on attendance in our Moosletter. Each week, we will highlight a different theme about why school attendance is so important, how it is supported by our policies, and what families can do to help.
Every day in the classroom gives your child valuable opportunities to learn, grow, and build confidence. Missing even a few days of school—whether excused or unexcused—can quickly add up. Research shows that students who miss more than 10% of the school year (about 18 days) are at greater risk of falling behind academically, struggling socially, and not graduating on time.
Consistency is crucial for your child’s development. Routine unplanned absences can hinder mental and cognitive growth, impacting a student’s ability to regulate emotions and connect with peers. Students who attend school every day with minimal absences are better able to build independence, stay on top of their classwork, learn time management skills, and cooperate with others.
The habits they build in elementary school are the same habits they will take with them to middle school, high school, and beyond.

Staff Spotlight: Ms. Zlotnick, School Counselor
This is Ms. Z’s sixth year at Red Hill, and she is a very important part of our school community. As our school counselor, Ms. Z supports students in learning skills to help them feel happy, safe, and successful both in and out of school.
Ms. Z knew she wanted to be a counselor because she enjoys helping kids build confidence and find tools that support their well-being. She loves how supportive and connected the Red Hill community is, and she also enjoys our beautiful outdoor spaces.
Outside of school, Ms. Z loves to read, go for walks on local trails, and visit the farmer’s market. She also enjoys baking and spending time with friends at restaurants. Her favorite book is Ella Enchanted, which she has read over a dozen times!
Students might be surprised to learn that Ms. Z didn’t grow up in Virginia—she lived in Las Vegas until she was 13! Her dream vacation would be a place where she could explore a city and still have time to relax at the beach.
If she could take students anywhere in the world, she’d take them to visit a college, a community college, and a technical school to show them all the exciting paths they can take for their future.
We’re so glad Ms. Z is part of the Red Hill family!
