A session not to be missed by any current or aspiring leaders!
This session will support leaders in developing a strong understanding of how to establish metacognitive teaching within their context.
The session will begin by exploring the rationale for following a metacognitive approach within any given context, and allow leaders to develop an argument for any changes that they may wish to make.
The session will then move on to re-consider exactly what metacognition is, providing a clear synthesis of the research for attendees.
Following this, the session will explore a range of top-tips and points to consider when looking to implement metacognition across a subject area, age group, or whole school. This will ensure that leaders are ready to go and make these changes in their own context.

Attendees will develop an understanding of the best way to implement metacognition in their own contexts, as well as being aware of some of the top tips, and key misconceptions, when implementation occurs in the area of metacognition.
Biography:
Nathan Burns is the premier expert in the UK on metacognition, working with schools, education organisations and educators across the world to develop high-quality teaching practice. Working in a number of UK based schools, Nathan worked as a pastoral leader, More Able coordinator, metacognition lead, and lately, as a Head of Maths. During his time in the classroom, Nathan wrote two well received books on metacognition - Inspiring Deep Learning and Teaching Hacks - exploring how the theory can be effectively applied in the classroom. Since leaving the classroom, Nathan now leads high-quality professional development. He works with schools across the UK to deliver training on metacognition, alongside efforts with Teach First and Ambition Institute to train up the next generation of teachers. Nathan also leads Maths specific training for organisations including the Maths Hub. You will often find Nathan presenting research at the latest teaching conference, as well as online, posting on socials as Mr Metacognition.
