Engaging students as writers is a great challenge. 

Explore and try out a variety of proven writing strategies that engage student writers and promote author craft experiences, including integration of generative AI into some activities. 

Examine a writing process structure that promotes students to spend more time revising and editing. 

Bring a journal or digital device to participate in the writing exercises!

Session Outcomes: 

• Experience a variety of author craft writing strategies that engage students in generating more quality ideas and details for topics.

• Reflect on the point of view of student writers for empathetic opportunities to mediate self confidence for writing.

Biograhpy

John McCarthy is the author of  “So All Can Learn: A Practical Guide to Differentiation.” He is also a frequent writer for Edutopia. He wears many hats, including education consultant for OpeningPaths.org, Adjunct Professor at Madonna University, Instructor for virtual courses, Lead Evaluator for Cognia, and the Lead Facilitator for the Deadwood Writers group (MI). 

All of these opportunities give John experiences working with schools across the globe in 6 of 7 continents, supporting instructional practices and seeing how Differentiation and writing are implemented and innovated. 

He brings to his sessions stories, best practices, and space for participants to reflect and exchange their stories.
