The Quiet Revolution: Accommodating Introverts in the Classroom
Teacher of Biology and Higher Education Subject Advisor for Biological Sciences at Haberdashers' Girls' School
Undeniably, a fundamental aim of teaching is to ensure that all students are able to engage with the learning activities delivered by the teacher.
And yet, many strategies and activities that are praised as being "good teaching" often fail to consider a significant number of our learners - specifically, the introverts.
Session Content
In this session we will pick apart some of the myths that surround introversion. We’ll look at the reasons why these students have skills and strengths that should be celebrated just as much as their more vocal extroverted peers. We will examine the history, neuroscience and evidence-based research that has explored introversion. The session will then consider practical strategies to ensure that introverted learners are included in our teaching; from how we question, to how we deliver feedback. To conclude we will also consider how this new understanding even influences how we interact with our fellow teaching colleagues!
This session has been well received at other conferences. Recent feedback includes:
"WOW!! Thoughts well and truly provoked. Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!"
"A wonderful session. I took so much away from this. 10/10 for presentation too - very slick and professional."
"A lot of important information presented in a very accessible way. Great job!"
Aims of sessions:
Attendees should leave with a greater understanding of introversion and its role in many of our students’ learning.
Attendees should leave equipped with practical strategies to empower introverted students in their classrooms.
