The Journey is Theirs: A Student-Centered Approach to Deep Learning
Andy is the PYP Coordinator at Antwerp International School
Drawing on extensive experience leading educational workshops, I will present a comprehensive framework designed to foster deep, meaningful learning across all classroom settings and disciplines. This session focuses on empowering educators with concrete strategies that help students discover their own pathways to understanding.
Participants will explore how to create truly student-centered learning environments through two key approaches: developing targeted strategies that enable students to find personalized entry points to content, and designing practical, hands-on self and peer assessment tools that shift ownership of learning directly to students.
This framework transforms traditional teaching paradigms by placing students at the center of their educational journey, creating the conditions where deep learning naturally emerges.
Creating Conditions for Deep Learning: A Student-Centered Framework
This session empowers educators to design the conditions necessary for meaningful learning by placing students at the very center of their own educational experience. Grounded in Self-Determination Theory and Professor Guy Claxton's research from "The Future of Teaching and the Myths That Hold it Back," this workshop transforms how we approach classroom learning.
Session Outcomes:
Through extremely practical strategies and real-life examples, participants will discover how to:
Develop Assessment-Capable Learners who can monitor and self-adjust their learning journey, taking ownership of their progress and growth.
Create Conditions for Exploration Before Explanation that honor students' natural curiosity and allow understanding to emerge organically before formal instruction.
Conceptually Unpack Learning Outcomes in ways that enable authentic co-construction of success criteria with students, making learning targets transparent and achievable.
Build a Solid Foundation for Social and Emotional Learning across all disciplines, demonstrating how these approaches naturally integrate SEL into academic content.
This research-based framework provides educators with the tools to shift from traditional teaching paradigms to learning environments where students become active architects of their own understanding.
