If you're interested in anything tech-related, you should get to know Mr. Fowler, the Acting Head of the Technological Education and Computer Studies department. He teaches Manufacturing, leads the SHSM program for Engineering, Innovation, and Design, and inspires students to explore hands-on learning and career opportunities in the trades here at Blakelock.
Mr. Fowler’s journey to teaching was anything but regular. In high school, he wanted to become an English teacher; however, his interests shifted after taking more hands-on tech courses. He ventured into the trades and joined the OYAP program, but he faced many setbacks, including dropping out of both OYAP and a Mechanical Engineering Technology program. Despite these obstacles, he returned to the trades. He earned his Red Seal Machinist certification after an 8000 hour apprenticeship before becoming a tech teacher.
For Mr. Fowler, family plays a big role in his life. He is the proud father of two sons with special needs, each presenting different challenges. “I love finding things to do with them that keep them engaged and learning,” he shares. Outside of family, he has a close group of friends from teaching and the industry whom he spends time with outside of work.
Mr. Fowler.
Mr. Fowler encourages all students to consider careers in the trades. “Earning money while learning transferable skills has very little downside,” he advises. He also teaches in the I-STEM program, where he appreciates the feedback-based assessments and evaluations to break the focus on grades and numbers.
Mr. Fowler’s approach to teaching is based on his own high school experiences. When his school merged with another, he gained access to courses he otherwise wouldn’t have experienced. The relationships he built with his tech teachers became some of the most impactful he had in high school, and he continued to stay in touch with them even after graduating. These experiences built his belief in the impact teachers can have, and he hopes to be a similar source of support for his students.
Mr. Fowler's passion for technology education shows the impact of a caring teacher. He is committed to helping students find rewarding paths in the trades. Mr. Fowler and his journey can inspire all of us to attain our goals.
