The Science Career Fair
“I remember feeling overwhelmed by the sheer number of career options. Everyone says there are plenty of science pathways, but what exactly are they?”

On Friday, November 15, Blakelock held a career fair for potential jobs in sciences, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). The event was organized by the science department, specifically Ms. Elliott, Mr. Iafrate and Ms. Lai.
The career fair took place during first and second period in the cafeteria. Students had the opportunity to look around and learn about diverse careers including pharmaceuticals, medical imaging, data analytics, audio assisted hearing, civil engineering, psychology and much more.
“It was a very enlightening experience to explore new career opportunities. It also helped me very much in my decisions for making post-secondary applications,” grade 12 student Kayla Strike mentioned when asked about her experience.

The purpose of the event was to provide students an opportunity to discover the different science pathways. The teachers asked students which career options they felt needed to be represented. From there, they reached out to organizations in the community for volunteers willing to share their experiences. At the fair, the volunteers reflected on their pathways from university to their current jobs, and the specifics of their jobs.
When asked about the turnout of the fair, Ms Elliott responded with the following: “The results were incredible—our grade 12s asked thoughtful questions, had engaging conversations, and truly seemed invested in the experience. The STEAM [Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics] club also did an amazing job helping us organize the event. Seeing everyones enthusiasm made all the effort worthwhile!”
The event was a success, as students discovered more about the options available following high school, and the paths these successful individuals took to discover the jobs they love most.
