On Tuesday, November 12th, Mr. Ebbers grade 12 Earth and Space Science class set up telescopes in Blakelock’s back parking lot to gaze at the stars. The night was clear, and the moon (above), Saturn (above), and Venus were shining brightly in the sky.

This unique experience inspired many to foster an interest in astronomy, as some students had never looked through a telescope previous to this experience. “It was such a cool experience even though it was really cold outside,” one student said.

Blakelock’s back parking lot was an ideal location because of minimal light pollution. Light pollution can pose a challenge in urban environments while viewing the stars; a dark night sky is preferable.

Gazing at the stars was a unique learning opportunity and it provided insights on the amazing world beyond our solar system. As the night came to an end, the memories of this night linger, inspiring many to keep looking up.
