HOSA, otherwise known as the Health Occupations Students of America, has grown into one of the most exciting club opportunities for students interested in healthcare. HOSA has thrived under the leadership of Trupti Dharmapuri, a Grade 11 student here at Blakelock, and the club’s president for the past two years.
HOSA allows students to explore careers in health sciences through competitions, leadership development, and hands-on experiences. Members of the club participated in several events at HOSA’s Spring Leadership Conference (SLC) in Toronto from March 27th to 28th. The event features a written exam, workshops, Ontario university advisors, and presentations from healthcare professionals, all on the first day. On the second day, qualifiers demonstrate their skills in their chosen discipline.

Preparation for this event is intense. “We spend weeks going over the contents using flashcards, Quizlets, and practice tests; a lot of it is independent studying,” said Trupti.

This year, TAB had several standout competitors. Grade 10 student Anoushka Guilani and Grade 12 student Alan Pan made it to the qualifiers and placed third in Canada for their team event in forensic science, along with two Grade 11 students who advanced to the second round in CPR.
Trupti, as well as HOSA teacher advisors Mrs. Branch and Mrs. Pajek, supported the club's members every step of the way. From registration to problem-solving, these leaders ensured members felt confident, excited, and prepared.
Beyond the competition, Trupti hopes to expand HOSA into a year-long healthcare club. “I want it to be more than just about the SLC, to be something fun and meaningful for students passionate about healthcare and helping others.”

As HOSA member Baran Rahimi reflected, “HOSA was one of the best experiences I had. You get to meet many amazing people with different perspectives and ideas. This year’s HOSA SLC was amazing, and I’ll definitely look forward to it next year!”
HOSA provides Blakelock students with unforgettable experiences, valuable skills, and a supportive community. With dedicated leadership and passionate members with big plans for the future, HOSA was an inspiring competition that allowed students to expand their knowledge and experience to become future healthcare professionals.
