CAFE Strategy: Accuracy: Recognise words at sight
This strategy focuses on building your recognition of sight words to help with reading fluency and accuracy. Many of these words are irregular words that do not follow a decoding rule or pattern, so as a reader you will not be able to sound them out. This strategy works on building the store of these words in your mind so you can read them accurately and quickly.

Fast Phonics: There is a new program on Reading Eggs called Fast Phonics. Fast Phonics is a phonics program that includes a range of letter/sound activities. Check it out next time you log in!
You can practise this strategy during your independent reading time by reading a sentence or page more than once to build fluency. You can also practise using the punctuation to make your voice go up and down.
Watch the teacher video to see an example of this strategy being used.
Listen to the read aloud of the story ‘A dinosaur called Tiny"
Then, choose 1-3 reading response activities from the grid to complete based on this story.
CAFE Strategy: Fluency: Use punctuation to enhance phrasing and prosody (end marks, commas, etc.)
Our Reading strategy this week focuses on using punctuation to help understand what we are reading and to build fluency. Grouping words together, rather than reading words one at a time, is called phrasing. Using expression while reading, such as moving our voice up and down, is called prosody.

CAFE Strategy: Accuracy - Skip the word, then come back.
This strategy is about using the context of an unfamiliar word to help you infer its meaning. When you come across an unknown word while reading, skip the word and continue to read the rest of the sentence without it. Once you know what the remainder of the sentence says, you may be able to think of a word that fits into the gap. You can then reread your sentence with this word in the place of the unknown word, to check that the spoken sounds match the written letters, and that the sentence makes sense.

CAFE Strategy: Comprehension - Summarise text; include sequence of main events
This strategy is about identifying the most important parts of a text and expressing them in a shorter version, so it can be more easily remembered.

Fast Phonics: There is a new program on Reading Eggs called Fast Phonics. Fast Phonics is a phonics program that includes a range of letter/sound activities. Check it out next time you log in!
During independent reading, you can practise summarising the text and sequencing the main events by thinking about what is happening in the story and explaining this in your words. Remember to turn off the ‘read to me’ function if your books have them, so that you can have a go at the letter/sounds all by yourself.

Accuracy: Flip the Sound
This strategy is about using letter sound knowledge to decode words by trying out, or ‘flipping’, the different sounds a letter can make until you can hear a word you recognise and makes sense!
Watch the Teacher video below which explains this strategy and how we can use it!
Then you can click through the slideshow to see how you can use it during Independent Reading time.

Comprehension: Recognise literary elements (problem and resolution)
The CAFE strategy ‘Recognise literary elements’ helps readers identify common parts of a story that will allow them to better understand what is happening in the story. This week, we are only focusing on two literary elements, which are the problem and resolution.

CAFE Focus: Expand vocabulary - Use pictures, illustrations and diagrams
Please remember to log in to Reading Eggs to complete the assigned tasks every week!
Readers increase their vocabulary by paying attention to pictures, illustrations and diagrams. These provide clues about the meaning of words and text. Knowing how to use background knowledge and looking at a picture, illustration or diagram, and inferring meaning, enhances vocabulary.
Here is a guide to help parents understand this strategy. You can also watch the teacher video to see the strategy being modelled during independent reading.

CAFE Focus: Comprehension: Monitor & Fix up
Please remember to log in to Reading Eggs to complete the assigned tasks every week!
Readers stop and think if what they are reading makes sense, whether they understand what is happening in the story, or what the selection is about. If meaning breaks down, the reader has strategies to go back and fix it.
