MBA students have the opportunity to take courses across the university for elective credit.
Students may earn up to 13.5 elective credits from outside the MBA program.
Courses must be:
Graduate-level
Business-related
Not already offered at McDonough
Requests are subject to approval by the MBA Program Office & the corresponding school. For more details on the cross registration policy, please see pages 51-53 in the MBA Student Handbook.
Students should NOT register themselves for any non-MBA course without approval from the Program Office.
Students must follow the cross registration process below.
To receive academic credit towards the MBA, students must follow the cross registration process. We encourage you to submit your requests as early as possible, but please note that processing typically takes several weeks or months as department administrators often do not review requests until after their internal registration periods. Historically, most requests have been approved or denied during the add/drop period for each corresponding semester.
See the list of cross-registration courses recently taken by MBA students & review the Restricted Course List.
Have the class syllabus ready to submit with the form!
Requests can take several weeks to process, so earlier is better than later.
Your request must be approved by both the MBA Program Office and the Class Department.
Some requests may not be approved until the end of add/drop as enrollments fluctuate.
Please note, schools that use a mod based schedule may have different deadlines for their 2nd mod classes, but still allow for later registration. For example, the School of Continuing Studies starts Mod B classes 10/18, and classes can potentially be added up to 10/22. Please consult the individual school websites and the University Registrar's website for specific add/drop deadlines, keeping in mind the MBAPO will still need time to process your request.

You may count approved Law Center courses toward the number of credits required for the MBA degree, but these courses are not factored into your MBA GPA.
Course must be graduate level in a degree granting program (non-degree courses will not be approved).
A maximum of 6 elective credits at SCS will be permitted; the 6 SCS credits will count towards the 13.5 credits MBA students are permitted to take outside the MBA program.
All requests must be reviewed and approved by the chair of the Graduate Curriculum and Standards Committee. Due to this, SCS requests will take longer to process than Main Campus courses and students should submit as early as possible prior to the start of classes.
Note: inclusion on this list does not guarantee future approval and each request needs to be individually approved by the Program Office.
Students may submit cross-registration requests for any mod when they have the opportunity to take an elective. For both FT and EP/FX students, this is typically Mod 3 of the first year.
Popular departments include: Foreign Service (MSFS), Public Policy (PPOL), Law (LAW), Security Studies (SEST), and some SCS courses.
Cross-registration requests are processed by individual departments and depend on factors such as:
Course popularity within the specific department.
Faculty members’ preferences for allowing non-program students to register.
Please see the updated list of restricted courses on Canvas for more information!
Yes. Cross-registration approvals often come through at the last minute to prioritize department students. Register for a full MBA course load and adjust if approval is granted. Contact your Program Advisor for updates.
Yes, for information, syllabus copies, or pre-requisite details. However, professors cannot grant registration permission. All cross-registration requests must go through department administrators.
Yes. Registering without permission does not guarantee the course counts toward your degree. Unauthorized registrations may be removed.
Credits and grades received in undergraduate language courses do not count toward your MBA degree or GPA, and will not appear on your MBA transcript.
Seats are not guaranteed. Students will be notified either way but may not know until the end of the first week of classes.
Some courses may not be available for cross registration due to outside department restrictions. For example, many departments do not allow students to register for their core courses, may be saving seats for newly admitted students, or may not let other students register for popular courses.
Since seats are not guaranteed until the first week of classes, students should plan a full MBA schedule and drop extra classes when the cross-registration courses are confirmed.
The MBA program does not follow the same academic calendar as other programs and it is the student’s responsibility to find out when their classes will meet, including class breaks.
Please note that ILEs taken during Spring Break may conflict with main campus courses who only have one week off rather than two during this period. All campus calendars (MBA, Main Campus, and SCS) can be found on the University Registrar's website.
