OCT Library News

2nd grade is so excited to start visiting our campus library!  We loved getting to know Mrs. Quinn, our new librarian.  Students will be allowed to check out one book per week when we visit the library. Please help your child take care of their library book by following the rules they have learned.  Students should keep their library book in their backpack and be ready to return it on their scheduled library day.

                                                                                                  Curriculum Night Update

Thank you so much for coming to Curriculum tonight a few weeks ago!  It was wonderful to see you and to share about the exciting things your child will be learning this year as a second grader!  Here is our slideshow,  incase you missed  the meeting.  A few big takeaways that are not on the slide show.

                                                              Reflex has started!

We talked to our mathematicians about Reflex, why it is important to them, how it will help them,  how to navigate inside the program, what is expected, and how we will have Reward Days that go along with it on Fridays.  This program is found in Classlink.  Each child should have a QR code inside their GREAT Tiger Folder.  Your child knows how to access Classlink by using that QR code.  (They have one on their supply box at school, too.) Once  they are inside Classlink, they will be accessing Reflex. It is an orange icon with "el" on it.  This stands for Explore Learning. This program is a fluency program that GCISD uses to work on our Fun Facts (math facts).  The students will know their facts SO well, if they use this program as it is intended.  Daily.  There is a green light that they need to get every day, and it resets each night at midnight.  The green light is found in the upper right hand corner of their screen.  It is a round circle.  If they have reached their green light, the circle will be entirely green with a green star in the middle of it.  We will be tracking how many green lights we get each week.  Our Reward Days will consist of  getting certificates from Reflex each week.   So, please check to be sure they have their green light and check their folders on Fridays for their Reward Day certificates.  it may take a few weeks for them to gather data and points.  But, it won't take them too long!  They may not get something every week, but, they should get something every other week.  Thank you so much!   We had a over 60 students  get a certificate on Friday!  Yay!

Reading and Writing

Ask your child:

Tell me about the story, The Important Book.

What is an "informational text"

Your child learned words such as "hollow, amount, material, space, identify, examine, and notice" in our vocabulary lessons.  Encourage your child to use these words as they talk with you about their lessons.

In week five, we dived deep into informational text.  Students enjoyed learning more about the three stages of matter as we used context clues to discover specific definitions of scientific words.

Students will continue to work on their personal narrative writings.  They are enjoying creating multiple prewrite thinking maps in preparation for their final story.

Math

Ask your child:

How do you solve a NCF-Triad? (number comparison fluency-triad.)

Can you show me what you know about adding and subtracting 10 from 47?

This week we began to add two digit numbers without regrouping.  We are learning to line our numbers up before we add them according to their place value.  We have continued to work on number lines with our Number Comparison Fluency Triads. We will be working on this skill weekly.  Also, we began to work on word problems and how to underline the quesiton to help us  know exactly what we are needing to do. Then, we circled the numbers we needed to solve the problem.   The biggest decision was deciding if we needed to add or subtract. It will get easier.

Next week, we will begin working on our Fun Fact fluency, and subtracting  2 digit numbers without regrouping.  We will  continue to work on our NCF-triads,  word problems, and adding 2 digit numbers without regrouping.

Please be sure they have a green light each night on Reflex.  Thank you!

Science

Ask your child:

What do you already know about insects?

This week, students took an end-of-unit assessment on Animal Characteristics.

Next week, we will begin a new unit on Life Cycles of Insects. Students will be observing butterfly larva through adult stages. They will learn about each of the for stages of the life cycle of  a butterfly.

Social Studies

Ask your child:

Why are you proud to be an American?

Next week, we will Identify contributions of historical figures, including Thurgood Marshall, Irma Rangel, and Theodore Roosevelt, who have influenced the state and nation.
