Different from MLA formatting, the APA formatting and style (7th edition) is used in research essays and academic papers. Our students are using Purdue OWL to complete an APA Webquest for a progress grade in both language arts and research.
This is also in preparation for AP Seminar and AP Research which they will take in their following Sophomore/Senior years of CHARGE!
Argumentative Research Essay
Throughout the freshmen year, several steps were taken for the students to create a finalized argumentative research essay that explores a topic of the student's choice. First, students were tasked with creating a presentation for research mapping, where they created a branching map that identified their topic and then broke smaller parts of this topic down to understand how the topic is affected by various factors. Students used this research map to find the branches they wanted to focus on for the essay.
After creating an annotated bibliography in their first semester to identify the best sources for their paper, the students began writing their research papers (examples below). The process to create the final argumentative research papers included various conferences with Ms. Johnston, peer review and editing sessions, and more!
The freshmen were awarded with donuts for being the first class in years to have a 100% submission rate for their research argumentative essays!
Romeo and Juliet
For the Romeo and Juliet summative project, students had to determine who was responsible for the death of Romeo and Juliet.
Freshman students were presented with three options:
A Podcast
A Case File
A Murder Map
Here is just one of the student's creative work of the murder map!
Reading Through Romeo and Juliet as a Class:
Before working on the Romeo and Juliet summative project, both blocks read the play with different students taking the roles of various characters.
To the right is an image of one of the freshmen in Block 1, who assumed the role of Romeo for the majority of the play.
