Dia 1, lunes 28 de abril

El lunes salí de Berja hacia el aeropuerto a las 8.30 de la mañana. Llegué a Dublín sobre las 15.30 de la tarde y una vez allí, cogí un autobús directo hacia Galway, mi destino final y donde voy a realizar mi job shadowing esta semana.

El lunes por la tarde, al llegar a Galway, nos estaba esperando Esther, la profesora de español del Educate Together School de Galway, instituto con el que nuestro centro está en contacto y en el cual estaré esta semana realizando mi job shadowing.

He viajado a Galway y voy a compartir esta semana aquí con 7 alumnos de 1º de Bachillerato del Ies Sierra de Gádor. Víctor, el director del instituto, viaja con nosotros como responsable del grupo. Los alumnos del instituto Sierra de Gádor se quedan en familias de Galway con alumnos irlandeses del centro. Estos mismos alumnos ya estuvieron en Berja en sus casas hace un par de meses, realizando una estancia de intercambio con nuestro instituto.

Una vez se han ido nuestros alumnos con sus familias de acogida, nos vamos Víctor, Esther y yo a cenar al centro de Galway. Esther nos comenta un poco sobre su instituto y la ciudad. Ha sido una cena muy agradable.

Sobre las 21:30 llego al hotel después de un día largo e intenso. Estoy ilusionada con la semana que me espera en Galway. Espero poder aprender mucho de esta experiencia.

On Monday I left Berja for the airport at 8.30 in the morning. I arrived in Dublin around 3:30 p.m. and once there, I took a direct bus to Galway, my final destination and where I will do my job shadowing this week.

We arrived in Galway around 19:30 p.m. Víctor (the director of the Sierra de Gádor secondary school) and I went to have dinner with Esther. Esther is the Spanish teacher at the Educate Together School in Galway, a secondary school with which our school is in contact and where the 7 students who have travelled together with Víctor, as group leader, and me will be attending class this week. The students of Ies Sierra de Gádor are staying with families in Galway with students from the Educate together school who were already in Berja at their home a couple of months ago.

While having dinner with Esther, she tells Victor and me about the school and the city of Galway. It was nice having dinner with them.

After a long day, I arrive at my hotel around 21:30 p.m. I´m excited about my week in Galway. I hope that I can learn a lot from this experience.

Galway Educate Together Secundary School is a new school under the patronage of Educate together.

GETSS opened its doors, for the first time, to1st Years in August 2019. We are Co-educational, Equality based, democratic and Students centred. We aim to provide an innovative, 21st Century approach which will promote excellence in learning and teaching as well as prioritising wellbeing, resilience, student voice and active citizenship. Día 2, martes 29 de abril

El martes a las 8 de la mañana nos recogió Esther a Víctor y a mi para ir al Educate Together School juntos. A primera hora conocimos a Sara, la directora del instituto y a varios profesores del centro, así como a la secretaria. A continuación, Esther nos enseñó todas las instalaciones del centro y nos explicó a qué se dedicaba cada una. También nos explicó diferentes proyectos en los que participaba el Educate Together School de Galway. Uno de estos proyectos es el Nurturing School Ireland, que ayuda a aquellos alumnos que no tienen, de momento, los medios económicos necesarios. El centro les da el desayuno cada día a estos alumnos.

A continuación, nos prepararon un desayuno al grupo de 7 alumnos de nuestro centro, a los alumnos irlandeses que los acogían en sus casas, a Víctor y a mí.

El Educate Together School of Galway también es miembro del School of Sanctuary. Esto significa que es es un centro inclusivo, seguro y que da la bienvenida a todo tipo de alumnado y a sus familias. Es un centro donde celebran la diversidad y la interculturalidad de su alumnado.

A segunda hora entré a la clase 5 de español de Esther y estuve de 2ª a 5ª hora en un taller de cultura latinoamericana que había programado con sus alumnos. El responsable de impartir el curso se llamaba Ezequiel, un chico argentino que trabaja en una ONG de Dublín. Esta ONG se encarga de dar a conocer la cultura latinoamericana, así como la relación que ésta tiene con Irlanda, por varios centros de la zona.

Durante toda la mañana Ezequiel estuvo impartiendo el taller, proyectando videos, explicando y concienciando a los alumnos sobre diferentes temas que afectan a países de Latinoamérica e intercambiando ideas con ellos. Se llevaron a cabo diferentes dinámicas, tanto individuales, como en grupo, en las que los alumnos aprendieron y se lo pasaron muy bien. El taller se impartió en inglés y en español. Los alumnos participaron y se portaron muy bien, colaborando con el profesor y manteniendo la atención y el interés por el taller.

Todos los alumnos del instituto trabajan con tablets, en las que tienen los libros de texto. Se les da la opción de escribir y trabajar las actividades en ellas, o bien de forma escrita en sus cuadernos. En ocasiones es el profesor el que decide la forma en la que lo deben hacer, y en otras ocasiones son los alumnos los que tienen la opción de decidirlo. Hay alumnos con dificultades encontradas que pueden realizar todas las actividades en sus tablets.

Me llamó especialmente la atención la cantidad de carteles, posters y fotos motivadores y positivos que hay en todas las instalaciones del centro. Adjunto algunas fotos.

Al finalizar las clases, fui a comer con Esther, Paula y Víctor. Paula trabaja en el centro de SNA (Special Needs Assistant), que apoyan y ayudan al alumnado con necesidades especiales. El Educate Together School of Galway cuenta en su plantilla con doce SNA. Esto es así porque al ser el Educate Together School of Galway un School of Sanctuary, estudia en el una gran cantidad de alumnado con necesidades especiales.

On Tuesday, Esther picked Víctor and me up at 8 in the morning to go to the Educate Together School. First thing in the morning we met Sara, the director of the school and several teachers from the school, as well as the secretary. Next, Esther showed us all the facilities at the school and explained what each one did. She also explained to us different projects in which the Educate Together School in Galway was involved. One of this project is the Nurturing School Ireland, which helps those students who do not currently have the necessary financial means. The school gives breakfast to these students.

After that, they prepared breakfast for the group of 7 students from our school, for the Irish students who welcomed them into their homes, for Victor and for me. The Educate Together School of Galway is also a member of the School of Sanctuary. This means that it is an inclusive, safe school that welcomes all types of students and their families. It is a school where they celebrate the diversity and interculturality of their students.

In the second hour I entered Esther's Spanish class 5 and spent from the 2nd to the 5th hour in a Latin American culture workshop that she had scheduled with her students. The person responsible for teaching the course was called Ezequiel, an Argentine man who works in an NGO in Dublin. This NGO is responsible for promoting Latin American culture, as well as the relationship it has with Ireland, through various centress in the area.

Throughout the morning Ezequiel was teaching the workshop, projecting videos, explaining and raising awareness among the students about different topics that affect Latin American countries and exchanging ideas with them. Different dynamics were held, both individually and in groups, in which the students learned and had a great time. The workshop was taught in English and Spanish. The students participated and behaved very well, collaborating with the teacher and maintaining attention and interest in the workshop.

All students at the school work with tablets, on which they have textbooks. They are given the option of writing and working on the activities in them, or they can also write them in their notebooks. Sometimes it is the teacher who decides how they should do it, and other times it is the students who have the option to decide. There are students with difficulties who can do all the activities on their tablets.

I was especially struck by the number of motivational and positive signs, posters and photos that are in all the school's facilities. I attach some photos.

At the end of the lessons, I went to eat with Esther, Paula and Víctor. Paula works as a SNA (Special Needs Assistant) at the Educate Together School of Galway. SNA in Ireland support and help students with special needs. The School has currently twelve SNAs on staff. This is because Educate Together School of Galway is a School of Sanctuary, and a large number of students with special needs study there.

DÍA 3, miércoles 30 de abril

El miércoles nos recogió Esther más tarde, sobre la 8:30 de la mañana para ir al instituto. Me quedo en la sala de profesores y dando una vuelta por el centro hasta las 10:30h, ya que no había planificada ninguna clase a la que pudiese entrar. A las 10:30 me voy con Esther, Víctor, así como con los 7 alumnos de nuestro centro y los alumnos irlandeses que los acogen, a hacer un tour turístico paseando por Galway en inglés y en español. Visitamos varios clubs de remo, deporte muy practicado en Galway, la universidad, el centro histórico y la zona de el anillo de Claddagh. A mediodía, sobre la 13:30, Esther tiene que volver al centro y Víctor y yo nos quedamos con los alumnos dando un paseo por el centro y comiendo.

Al finalizar la jornada escolar, llevamos a los alumnos de nuestro centro al Educate Together School para que se puedan ir con sus respectivas familias de acogida.

On Wednesday Esther picked us up later, around 8:30 in the morning to go to school. I stayed in the teachers' room and walked around the school until 10:30 a.m., since there was no class planned that I could enter/attend. At 10:30 a.m. I leave with Esther, Víctor, as well as the 7 students from our secondary school in Berja and the Irish students who host them to take a sightseeing tour of Galway in English and Spanish. We visited several rowing clubs, a sport widely practiced in Galway, the university, the historic centre and the Claddagh ring area. At noon, around 1:30 p.m., Esther had to return to the Educate Together School and Víctor and I stay with the students for a walk around the city centre and have lunch together.

At the end of the school day, we take the students to the Educate Together School so that they can go with their respective host families.

Día 4, jueves 1 de mayo

El jueves, 1 de mayo no es festivo en Irlanda. Hoy hay planificada una excursión todo el día con los siete alumnos españoles y los alumnos irlandeses que los acogen a las islas de Aran, a la que Esther ha organizado que yo también me una. Cogemos un autobús en Galway que nos lleva a la zona donde tenemos que coger el barco. El autobús tarda una hora aproximadamente. El barco nos lleva a Inishmore, la isla más grande de las tres que hay en la isla de Arán. Pasamos prácticamente todo el día en la isla. Algunos alquilamos bicis para recorrer la isla y otros prefieren pasear. Eshter nos explica cómo funcionan los centros educativos en Irlanda, donde prácticamente todos los centros son concertados y la mayoría de ellos católicos. Hay muy pocos centros públicos en Irlanda. El Educate Together School es un centro que está por todo Irlanda, tanto en primaria como en secundaria. No es un centro católico y funciona como una cooperativa. También nos explica que en Irlanda hay exámenes estatales al finalizar 3º y 5º. Hay dos tipos de exámenes, dependiendo de las características del alumnado: ordinary y higher levels. Son los alumnos los que deciden cuál de los dos hacen, así como en qué asignaturas realizan cada uno de ellos. Para aquellos estudios posteriores que requieren de una nota alta, es conveniente que los alumnos realicen los higher levels ya que, si no es así, les resultará muy difícil entrar en los estudios universitarios que desean.

Todos disfrutamos del día y volvimos cansados a Galway sobre las 19:30h.

Thursday, May 1 is not a public holiday in Ireland. Today there is an all-day excursion planned with the seven Spanish students and the Irish students who host them to the Aran Islands, which Esther has organized for me to also join. We take a bus in Galway that takes us to the area where we have to catch the boat. The bus takes approximately an hour. The boat takes us to Inishmore, the largest of the three islands on Aran Islands. We spent practically the entire day on the island. Some of us rent bikes to explore the island and others prefer to walk. Eshter explains to us how educational schools work in Ireland, where practically all the are subsidized and most of them are Catholic. There are very few public schools in Ireland. The Educate Together School is a center that is located throughout Ireland, both in primary and secondary schools. It is not a Catholic school and operates as a cooperative. She also explains to us that in Ireland there are state exams at the end of 3rd and 5th grade. There are two types of exams, depending on the characteristics of the students: ordinary and higher levels. It is the students who decide which of the two they do, as well as in which subjects they do which of them. For those subsequent studies that require a high grade, it is advisable that students take the higher levels since, if not, it will be very difficult for them to enter the university studies they want.

We all enjoyed the day and returned tired to Galway around 7:30 p.m.

Día 5, viernes 2 de mayo

El viernes Esther me recoge las 8 de la mañana para ir al instituto. A segunda hora entro a clase de 1º con Sarah

O´Neill. Es una study clase en la que la profesora les enseña a los alumnos técnicas de estudio. Durante la clase trabajan con mind maps y con diary entries.

A tercera hora me voy con Esther y su clase de 5º de español a un campo de fútbol irlandés que hay a cinco minutos andando del instituto. Los siete alumnos españoles de nuestro centro también vienen. Esther ha preparado una clase de cultura y deportes irlandeses. Los alumnos practican hurling y fútbol irlandés juntos.

Volvemos al instituto y a 5ª hora entro a una clase de español con alumnos de 1º. Están repasando y aprendiendo conceptos básicos, ya que es el primer curso que estudian español. Los alumnos realizan ejercicios en su tablet para repasar vocabulario. Algunos usan sus cuadernos para hacerlos. En este caso, cada alumno decide cómo hacerlos. La última parte de la clase la profesora y yo jugamos con los alumnos a “Veo veo, qué ves”.

A 6ª hora entro a una clase de 6º de inglés. La profesora se llama Orla. Esther ya me ha explicado previamente que en Irlanda en clase de inglés se estudia literatura. En clase están estudiando a William Butler Yeats. La profesora les habla sobre el autor y estudian en profundidad el poema Sailing to Byzantium.

Por la tarde, como he hecho cada día desde el martes, me voy al centro de Galway y paseo por la ciudad y los alrededores.

El viernes Esther y Paula quedan con Víctor y conmigo. Vamos a comer todos juntos y después a escuchar música irlandesa en directo en un pub. Nos lo pasamos muy bien.

Esther y Paula se están portando muy bien con nosotros, quedando siempre que pueden.

On Friday Esther picks me up at 8 in the morning to go to school. In the second period I go to 1st grade class with Sarah O'Neill. It is a study class in which the teacher teaches the students study techniques. During class they work with mind maps and diary entries.

In the third period I go with Esther and her 5th grade Spanish class to an Irish soccer field five minutes walk from the school. The seven Spanish students from our secondary school in Berja also come. Esther has prepared an Irish culture and sports class. Pupils play hurling and Irish football together.

We return to school and in the 5th period I enter a Spanish class with 1st year students. They are reviewing and learning basic concepts, since it is the first course they study Spanish. Students do exercises on their tablet to review vocabulary. Some use their notebooks to do them. In this case, each student decides how to do them. The last part of the class the teacher and I played “I spy, what do you see” with the students.

In the 6th period I enter a 6th grade English class. The teacher's name is Orla. Esther has already explained to me previously that in Ireland literature is studied in English class. In class they are studying William Butler Yeats. The teacher talks to them about the author and they study the poem Sailing to Byzantium in depth.

In the afternoon, as I have done every day since Tuesday, I go to the centre of Galway and walk around the city and surrounding areas.

On Friday Esther and Paula meet with Víctor and me. We're all going to eat together and then listen to live Irish music in a pub. We have a really good time together.

Esther and Paula are being very nice to us, hanging out whenever they can.

Día 6, sábado 3 de mayo

El sábado me voy temprano al centro de Galway a ver un mercadillo artesanal del que me ha hablado Esther. Sobre las 12 nos recogen Paula y Esther a Víctor y a mi para pasar el día juntos por Connemara, un parque natural precioso que hay cerca de Galway. Vamos a Cong, el pueblo donde se grabó la película The quiet man. Después de comer allí, nos dirigimos a Fling, una pequeña aldea donde el cuñado de Esther tiene un pub junto a un lago. A las 15:30 realizamos un taller sobre la lana de la zona y nos explican todo el proceso desde que se esquila una oveja y llega a la casa de la chica que nos imparte el taller, hasta que se consigue el producto final (una bufanda, un jersey, etc.). Ha sido un día muy bonito y hemos visto lugares paradisiacos.

On Saturday I go early in the morning to the centre of Galway to see a craft market that Esther told me about. Around 12 a.m. Paula and Esther pick up Víctor and me to spend the day together in Connemara, a beautiful natural park near Galway. We go to Cong, the town where the movie The quiet man was filmed. After eating there, we head to Fling, a small village where Esther's brother-in-law has a pub near a beautiful lake. At 3:30 p.m. we held a workshop on the wool of the area and they explain the entire process from when a sheep is sheared and arrives at the house of the girl who teaches us the workshop, until the final product is obtained (a scarf, a sweater, etc.). It has been a wonderful day and we have seen paradisiacal places.

Día 7, domingo 4 de mayo

El domingo nos levantamos muy temprano, ya que salimos de la estación de autobuses de Galway a las 6:30 de la mañana hacia el aeropuerto de Dublín. Llegamos al aeropuerto de Málaga sobre las 16 de la tarde. Finalmente, sobre las 18:30 de la tarde llegamos a Berja.

Ha sido una experiencia muy enriquecedora el poder vivir cómo se trabaja en un instituto de Irlanda, y mas concretamente, en el Educate Together School of Galway.

Muchas gracias a todas las personas que han colaborado y lo han hecho posible.

On Sunday we wake up very early, as we leave Galway bus station at 6:30 in the morning for Dublin Airport. We arrive at Malaga airport around 4pm. Finally, around 6:30 p.m. we arrive in Berja.

It has been a very enriching experience to be able to experience how it works in a secondary school in Ireland, and more specifically, in the Galway Educate Together Secondary School Galway.
