Where possible, ignore resistance, delays, and attempts to manipulate you. If consequence is necessary, use a form of time-out or response cost consequence i.e. loss of privileges. Do not convey exasperation with the student or act vindictively to their behaviour. Quietly show the student that you are aware of their behaviour. Do this in a matter-of-fact manner and do not give the impression that you have achieved a ‘one-up’ on the student.
