For some children noise is experienced in their body in the same way pain is experienced. Here are some tips to support students with this:
noise cancelling or reducing headphones
teach the student to cover their ears with their hands
give advance warning when possible
identify the students particular triggers
distract with a fidget or another calming tool
use a social story to teach student about managing unexpected noises
offer breaks in a quiet place
practice in places that are not too noisy
Gradually increase the students tolerance of unexpected noises
