Sometimes a quick redirect helps students to make an appropriate choice and change their behaviour. This strategy keeps things positive, avoids a larger issues, and helps the student understand what they should be doing. These phrases should be used with a calm, non confrontational voice, often delivered and then move away from the student so it does not become a battle of wills. Then check in again if required.Â
Here are some example phrases:
A student is in the wrong place, ask "Where should you be?" general responses you will get is the student will move to the appropriate place, or tell you where they should be and you then say, ok great, off you go then.
A student is touching another student, ask "Where should your hands be?"
A student is not following class expectations, ask "What is your job?", "What is it time for?" "What should you be doing now?"
A student is talking when the teacher or another student is talking, ask "How may people talk at once?"
A student doesn't put their belogings away, ask "Where do our belongings go?"
Yes if... flip a statement from a no to a yes if. Yes you can have a break from learning if you are not disrupting the class.
