Click the Strategies drop down menu. Select a strategy, read and trial the strategy. Remember you need to be consistent and try something more than once (ideally four to six weeks) before you know if it is effective.
If a student refuses to work don't make it a power struggle. Tell the student "we will talk about this later." This lets other students know you are not ignoring the behaviour and gives you time to handle it privately with the student later on.
Don’t:
assume the child is lazy
act out of frustration or anger
use threats
embarrass the student
Do:
keep teaching
give wait time
ignore the small behaviours
be reflective about triggers
focus on the relationship
consider learning challenges
talk privately to the student
use logical consequences (and consider them ahead of time)
discuss those consequences with the student
use de-escalation strategies to help calm the situation
plan breaks
give choices
consider reducing work
use student interests
provide accommodations
collaborate with the student and their family
