Once the students are calm and the source of the conflict has been ascertained facilitate a conversation between the involved parties. Do not have additional students, only those involved.
1. Explain that you are going to give both students a chance to talk and that it is important when one person is talking that everyone else is listening, even if they disagree with what they hear. Explain everyone will get their chance to have a say.
2. Ask the first student to the other student what they did not like and how they were feeling.
3. Ask the next student to tell the first student what they did not like and how they were feeling. Continue this until all students have had their chance.
4. use paraphrasing to show the students that you have heard what they have told you. Encourage the students to consider the others point of view/side of the story.
5. Ask the students if they can think of what they could have done differently?
6. Help the students come up with a plan for what they can do differently next time.
7. Facilitate a genuine apology if the students feel they would like to do this. There is little point forcing people to say sorry without any genuine feeling behind it.
You could use the Five Steps to a Good Apology to facilitate this.
