Last week we shared the special prayer that Father Andrew wrote. We reflected about how it meant that we are all special. You can remind yourself of the prayer at the side.

This week we are going to be thinking about what makes us special.

Last week we began to think about what makes us special. What were some of the things that you thought of?

Have a think about the following questions -

  • What is the most valuable thing you own?

  • What is the most valuable item you’ve seen close-up?

Maybe someone’s grandad has a really precious painting hanging on his wall that you’ve never been allowed to touch. Maybe someone’s auntie has just started driving a new car that you’d love to go in, but haven’t been allowed?

What do you think is the most valuable thing we have in school? What do you think is the most valuable thing in the room your sitting in?

Below are some pictures of things that are very valuable - they are worth a lot of money!

A few years ago, some scientists worked out the value of a human body. Some scientists thought that if we took out all our organs and sold them, we would have a price tag of over £35 million! Other scientists worked out the value of a human body based not on the resale value of our organs, but on the value of each chemical component, broken down to its lowest form. The biggest part of your body is water, so that’s a whole lot of oxygen and carbon! You’ve also got potassium, iron, calcium, tin and even gold, but only trace amounts, so that’s worth nothing. The scientists calculated that if we add together the value of each element, we get a price tag of just £122!

How much do you think you are worth? £122? £35 million? Maybe somewhere in between? Maybe more?

If I could give you all a price tag, this would be it.

That's right - PRICELESS. You are so valuable, you don't have a price!

Look at your fingers - you will see your finger prints. You are the only person who will ever have fingerprints exactly like yours. There has never been another human like you in the past, there is no one exactly like you now and there will never be another human like you in the future. You are a one-off: completely unique and entirely priceless!

Read the following quote and think about what it means to you.

Think About...

The Bible has lots to say about our value. It often talks about how God sees us and loves us, and how we should value other people. Jesus said that not even one sparrow falls from the sky without God noticing. So if God values something so small, imagine how much value he places on each of us.

We need to remember to value people the way God does, not for the colour of their eyes, or where they come from, not for the colour of their skin. We need to love one another as God loves us.

Think about the following questions:

  • How does it make us feel, knowing that we are so precious?

  • How can we make other people feel precious?

  • What can we do to show that we value the other members of our class?

  • What will you do today to show someone that you think that they’re priceless?

Let Us Pray...

Please bow your head for the prayer.

Dear God,

Thank you for all the children here.

Thank you that we are all unique and different, and thank you that we are precious to you.

Please help us to show other people that we value them and their uniqueness, too.

Amen.

Have a lovely day everyone!

Tuesday 30th June

Good morning everyone. It’s Miss Godsell here with you today. I hope you had a lovely Monday and are ready for another great day.

Today we are going to sing the hymn "Let There Be Love".

Today our theme for assembly is 'not the same but different'.

How many different kinds of flowers can you name in 30 seconds?

Look at the following pictures - what is the same? What is different?

You could think about the colours, the shape, the number of petals, if they have a scent, what time of year they grow.

Now look at these animals, what can you see that is the same? What can you see that is different?

Christians believe that, when God made the world, he didn’t just make one type of flower or one animal. He didn’t make every plant the same shade of green or give every animal four legs to walk on. He made a world full of colour and variety. A world full of interest, where there is always so much more to find out about and enjoy!

Think About...

Just as God loves variety in nature, he also loves variety in us. He didn’t make us all the same and he doesn’t want us all to be the same.

Imagine if we were all the same - we liked the same things, play the same games, eat the same food. The world wouldn't be a very exciting place! It is fantastic to be different from other people.

Is there something about you that makes you different from other people? What do you enjoy doing most? What are you good at? Take a moment to realise that you are special just the way you are.

Remember like flowers and animals we are all unique. We all have different skills, we all look different to one another - but we are all special.

Let Us Pray...

Please bow your head for the prayer.

Dear God,

Thank you that we are all special.

Thank you that our world is full of variety.

Thank you for beautiful flowers and for animals that are so different from one another.

Please help us to realise that we don’t need to be the same as other people, but that we can be proud of who we are.

Amen

Have a lovely day everyone!

Today we are going to continuing thinking about what makes us special.

First, we are going to listen to this book written by an author called Todd Parr. It is called 'It's OK to be different

Here are the colours in a rainbow.

Which is your favourite colour? Cast your vote so we can find out what Cathedral School's favourite colour is.

(After you have cast your vote, you might need to refresh the page to see it count on the graph below)

These are Cathedral School's Favourite Colours!

Are you wearing you favourite colour today? Do you have anything that is your favourite colour that is special to you - maybe a bag or a notebook?

Imagine that your favourite colour didn't exist. What would it be like!

Who made the colours then? Where did they come from?

There is light all around us in the day and at night.

Think About...

Christians believe that God made the light, and he also made the lights that we need to see by: the sun and the moon and the stars. The light from the sun and the moon is a mixture of all the colours that we see.

God made the light to contain all these different colours, and we’d miss any of the parts that weren’t here.

He made each one of us different too. Boys and girls, short and tall, medium and not so medium, blue eyes, green eyes, brown eyes, God made each one of us, and every one of us is different. And every one of us is special.

Let Us Pray...

Please bow your head for the prayer.

Loving God,

We thank you for making us

Tall, not so tall,

Good at sport, not so good at sport,

Friendly, shy,

Chatty, quiet.

Thank you, God, that I am who I am.

Amen.

Have a lovely day everyone!

Thursday 2nd July

Good Morning Cathedral School, its Reverend Lisa here with you this morning. Today I am going to share with you my favourite prayer. But before I share with you, let's sing together.

Today we are going to sing the hymn "Jubilate ".

Please click below for the audio.

Jubilate.ppt

Today, it’s my turn to share my favourite prayer with you. It’s a prayer written by St Teresa of Avila, who was born over 500 years ago in Spain. St Teresa was a nun. She wrote books about her relationship with God and she also wrote prayers that many people still read and use today; this is the one that I’d like to share with you:

Let nothing trouble you,

let nothing frighten you,

everything passes away:

God never changes,

patience obtains all things.

Whoever has God lacks nothing;

God is enough.

I have to admit, I am a bit of a worrier! I let things worry or, to put it like St Teresa, I let things trouble me. Sometimes, I get worried about things that feel like they’re big things – such as moving to a new home or starting a new job. Sometimes, I get worried about small things – usually they’re small mistakes I’ve made that can easily be put right.

This prayer reminds me that the things I worry about won’t last forever; that’s what St Teresa meant when she wrote ‘everything passes away’. So, I need to work through and try to let go of my worries – but that can be really hard! I often can’t do that on my own and need to talk about it with people I trust. I also need to talk about it, or pray about it, with God.

Unlike my worries, God is always there and God doesn’t change. I don’t need to hold on to my worries. Sometimes, letting go of my worries is hard and I need to be patient with myself; this prayer reminds me of that too.

This prayer says to me that God wants my heart and my mind to be calm and peaceful, without worries that I keep to myself. Sharing worries with people I trust and with God is really important – and it’s important that you do that too.

I wonder whether there’s anything you’re worried about right now?

Who do you talk to when you’re worried? I wonder if there’s anyone else who might be able to help you when you’re worried?

Let Us Pray...

Please bow your head for the prayer.

Let nothing trouble you,

let nothing frighten you,

everything passes away:

God never changes,

patience obtains all things.

Whoever has God lacks nothing;

God is enough.

Amen.

Friday 3rd July

As you know, Friday's are for our Year 6 children to lead Collective Worship. This morning, Ruby, Albert, Sienna and Justice are leading assembly.

Good Morning Cathedral School! Today we are thinking about joy.

Today we are going to sing the hymn "One More Step"

Please click below for the audio.

One more step.mp3
One more step.ppt

What does joy mean to me?

Joy means happiness that always stays with you. Joy means to feel great pleasure and happiness. Joy is a happy feeling! (Justice)

Joy makes me feel like I can do anything. Joy gives me great happiness. Joy makes me feel stronger. (Albert)

Joy is the best feeling you could ever have in you! Joy to me makes 10x happier than I already was that day. Singing and dancing with your friends is joyful. (Sienna)

Joy means to me when we are together and help one another, when we go through hard times but God is always with us and helps us get back on track and when we believe with no boundaries. (Ruby)

What does joy mean to you?

What does joy look like at Cathedral School? At home? In the community?

Joy is not the same as happiness, joy is something that stays with you for a long time. Happiness is something that you feel at that very moment. I think everyone should spread joy around the world. (Justice)

I think people should spread joy to make the world a better place. (Albert)

We see joy a lot at Cathedral School - when children have performed at the Cathedral, when they have written a fantastic story and shared it with someone else - joy is all around us!

Here are some pictures of what we think joy looks like. Can you draw a picture of joy? What does it look like to you?

Reflection:

Joy is very important because it's not good for you to feel sad all the time. It's ok to feel sad sometimes but not all time, that's why joy is there for you! (Sienna)

Think about how you can spread joy to someone during this time. (Sienna)

Joy is important because we need to be like Jesus. We must follow the path he led. We must find the living, colourful joy in our hearts. We must be like Jesus to make the world a better place and to finish the journey he took. Please close your eyes and think about how you are going to bring joy to the world today. (Ruby)

Let Us Pray...

Please bow your head for our prayers.

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank you for joy. Thank you for friends and family. Thank you for laughter and smiles. Forgive us our sins. Help us become a better person every day. Help others to find joy.

In Jesus' name.

Amen

Dear God,

Fill our hearts with joy,

Fill our minds with learning,

Fill our classrooms with peace

And fill our day with kindness and happiness.

Amen.

Dear Lord,

Thank you for the joy that you have given us. Please help others to spread joy around the world so we can make it a better place. Sorry for not spreading joy around the world.

In Jesus' name,

Amen

Our Father,

Thank you for joy and keeping us motivated.

Amen

Have a lovely, restful weekend!
