Autumn 1 - Week 7

Monday 19th October

Good Morning Cathedral School,

It is Mrs Scott here with you this morning. I hope you had a good weekend. This week we will continue to think about Harvest. We are going to look at parables and stories linked to harvest in The Bible.

Can you see the pips inside this apple? What are pips? If they were planted, what would they grow into? Can you stretch up and show how high an apple tree can grow?

An apple tree can grow considerably taller than a person.

Jesus once asked the people listening to him to think about an even tinier seed which would grow into a big tree.

Matthew 13:31-32

Jesus told them another parable: 'The Kingdom of heaven is like this. A man takes a mustard seed and sows it in his field. It is the smallest of all seeds, but when it grows up, it is the biggest of all plants. It becomes a tree, so that birds come and make their nests in its branches.'

We also have a saying: 'Tall oaks from little acorns grow.'

What do you think Jesus' story and our saying mean?

It means that from small beginnings something big can happen! One person can make a positive change that can affect the lives of many.
Can you estimate how many of Jesus' followers (or Christians) there are in the world today?

There are 4.5 million people belong to Christian churches in this country and many millions of Christians in the world today, yet it all began with one person (Jesus) who was born in a very ordinary place (a stable), who grew up in an ordinary home, in an ordinary town. For 33 years no one really noticed him.

Jesus' life and the lives of many people down through history show us that from small beginnings something big can happen. One person can make a difference to the world, no matter how small and unimportant they might seem.

Can you think of someone you have been learning about in class recently who made a positive change to the world through their actions?

Listen to Jupiter by Holst.

Picture in your mind the night sky full of stars.

Think of how many stars there must be - too many to count!

Think of the huge number of people there are in the whole world - many more than the stars.

Think of the vast, wide world, and think of yourself.

What can you do to make a difference to the world?

Think of today.

What will you do to make a difference to the world around you?

Will you say a kind word to someone who is sad?

Will you help someone to do something difficult?

Will those you meet today find that the world is a brighter place because of you?

Prayer

Dear God,

Though we are so small and the world is so big,

help us to make a difference to everyone that we meet today.

Amen.

I hope you have a wonderful day.

Tuesday 20th October

Good Morning Cathedral School. Today we are going to think about The Parable of the Sower

Have you ever sowed a seed?

What did you need to remember?

Read this presentation about The Sower and the Seeds Parable.

The Sower.ppt

What can we learn from this parable?

(Class teachers - if your class enjoyed this assembly there are lots more linked resources on Twinkl, including playdough mats, word banks, writing frames etc)

Reflection Time

Today we are going to listen to 'We Plough the Fields and Scatter' again. As you listen, think about something positve you will do today that will produce 'fruit'.

This version is recorded in a church; the organ plays and the congregation sing. Please read the words silently in your head and reflect on them.

Dear God,

Thank you for stories.

A story can be like a seed,

it can grow in our minds,

helping us to think and feel differently.

Let your good story -

of people living for each other,

sharing with each other,

caring for each other -

let this good story grow and grow in me.

Amen.

Wednesday 21th October

Good Morning Cathedral School.

What a rainy day! At least it will help the plants, flowers and crops to grow but not much fun when you are trying to get to school!

Noahs Ark PowerPoint.ppt

Noah's Ark

This is a familiar story fromthe Old Testament. Please read the presentation.

Here's an extention of the story....

"Noah and his family were tired and sad. The animals and birds were tired and sad too. They had been in the ark for a very long time. When at last the door was opened they slowly made their way outside. The sky was still cloudy and dull. Smelly black mud covered everything in sight. Everyone was unhappy at what they saw.

But God hadn't forgotten Noah and all the creatures. To make them feel better, he decided to put a rainbow into the cloudy sky. 'I shall make a rainbow,' God said, 'and it will be one of the most beautiful sights in the world.'

So, first of all, God made a stripe of red. 'In my new world,' he said, 'red will be the colour of bright poppy flowers, ripe apples and robin's chests.'

Then came orange. God said: 'Orange will be the colour of pumpkins, autumn leaves and ginger cats watching goldfish!'

Yellow was next. God decided that yellow would be the colour of buttercups and the honey made by busy bees. '

'Here's a nice colour,' God thought, as he mixed green. 'I shall make lots of things that are green, like cabbages and caterpillars, grass, and grasshoppers too.'

And next to green God put blue and indigo. 'Blue and indigo will be the colour of the sea and the sky,' he decided.

Finally God added purple. 'Purple,' he said, 'will be a very special colour. I will use it for butterfly flowers and hills covered with heather. It will be the colour of delicious grapes and juicy plums.'

Red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and purple all shone brightly together in the rainbow. Noah smiled when he saw the colours in the sky, and the animals felt happy too! It was God's promise that the world would soon be new again. "

What would you chose to represent the colours in your rainbow?

Let's hope we see a rainbow today!

Reflection Time

Today we are listening to Ladysmith Black Mambazo singing Rain, Rain, Beautiful Rain.

We heard it last week and it is perfect for today.

This choir come from South Africa. Why do you think they are so thankful for the rain?

Prayer

Lord God,

Thank you for all the colours of the rainbow

which brighten up our homes and school.

Thank you for crayons and paints which are fun to use.

Help us to make the world a happier place for everyone,

especially for those who need our friendship and our care.

Thank you for keeping your promises.

Amen.

Thursday 22nd October

Good morning, it’s Reverend Lisa here with you today.

I hope that you and all your teachers and support staff have had a good first half term back in school and that you have a good break next week.

This term, we’re thinking about how Jesus helps his friends.

Cinderella

I wonder if you know the story of Cinderella? I know that Reception have been reading it in class recently.

Do you have a favourite part of the story?

For me, there’s a part that keeps me on the edge of my seat, trying to read the story slowly enough to take it all in but wanting to rush ahead to find out what happens next.

The prince has danced with a mysterious girl but she ran away, leaving only a glass slipper behind, and he desperately wants to find her.

It’s tricky for him though. He won’t be able to recognise her by looking at her face. In fact, the only way that the prince will recognise the girl is if the glass slipper fits her.

The prince searches all over the town and, just when he starts to think he’ll never find the girl, he finds Cinderella. The glass slipper fits perfectly and he recognises her as the mysterious girl he danced with.

Today, we’re thinking about Jesus and his friend Mary Magdalene.

After Jesus had died, Mary went to his tomb very early in the morning. The tomb was empty. Jesus’ body had gone. Mary was outside Jesus’ tomb crying. Inside the tomb, she saw two angels, “Why are you crying?” they asked her. Mary replied, “They have taken away my Lord. I don’t know where they have put him.” Then, she turned around and saw a man. He asked her why she was crying and who she was looking for. Mary thought he was the gardener and said, “Did you take him away, sir? Tell me where you put him, and I will get him.” Mary desperately wanted to find Jesus. The thing is, she wasn’t able to recognise him by looking at his face.

There are no glass slippers in the Bible story. There is, however, just one way that Mary will recognise Jesus. The man (the one who she thought was the gardener) said to her, “Mary”. Mary turned to him. She recognised him now; she knew it was Jesus. She said to him in Hebrew, “Rabbouni” (which means teacher).

Jesus used Mary’s name. As soon as he said to her, “Mary” she knew who he was. She recognised him as the one she was looking for.

After this, Jesus gave Mary a special task; he told her to go and tell the disciples about what had happened. She went to them and said, “I have seen the Lord!”

Let’s think for a moment about the Fruits of Friendship with God.

Which of them do you think Mary felt when she recognised Jesus?

Jesus used Mary’s name and he uses our names and gives us special tasks too. Jesus sent Mary to tell the disciples about everything that had happened. Jesus sends us to show the Fruits of Friendship with God to others through the things we do and say.

Choose one of the Fruits of Friendship with God. How could you show this to others through your words and actions?

Please reflect on this while you listen to some music.

Reflection Time

Today we are listening to some music from Profiev's ballet Cinderella.

Prayer

Lord Jesus,

You know each of us by name and give us special tasks.

Help us to listen to your teachings and put them into action through the things we do and say.

Amen.
