Tuesday 18th May
Good Morning Everyone. We will be spending our next few assemblies getting ready for Pentecost, which is on Sunday.
Wind
How can you tell that the wind is blowing?
These picture might give you some clues.
Please read this poem.
Just as you can see the results of the wind but cannot see the wind itself, so Christians believe that people can see the results of being a friend of God by the things they do, but they cannot see God himself.
God the Holy Spirit is often described as a wind; the Holy Spirit is God in action in the world but invisible.
Prayer
Dear God,
Thank you that you send your Holy Spirit to act in the world and within people's lives, changing them for the better. We cannot see the Holy Spirit but we can see the difference in people's lives.
Amen
Wednesday 19th May
The Dove
Yesterday we thought about the wind and that it is a symbol of the Holy Spirit. Today we are going to think about the dove and why it also symbolises the Holy Spirit.
Why do you think the dove might be a symbol of the Holy Spirit?
Peace
The dove is a sign of peace. The Holy Spirit is the peace-bringer and that is why the dove is sometimes its symbol. Sometimes the dove has an olive branch in its beak which is also a sybol of peace.
How can you bring peace?
The Holy Spirit is often known as 'God in action'. How can you bring peace today? In the playground? In the classroom? At home?
Prayer
Dear God,
Let us remember the words of St. Francis,
'Make me a channel of your peace, where there is hatred let me bring your love'.
Amen.
Thursday 6th May
It’s Revd Lisa here. I hope you have had a good week so far.
Fruits of Friendship with God
This term, we’re revisiting the Fruits of Friendship with God. Today, we’re going to be thinking about self-control.
Self-Control
Think about what you’ve done at school this week, and the choices you’ve made about your behaviour or perhaps the way you have reacted to other people – especially if someone has done something you don’t like.
I wonder if anyone can give an example of a good choice they’ve made this week?
When we make good choices, we’re showing self-control.
If someone says something that hurts our feelings, and we don’t say something mean back to them, we’re showing self-control.
When have a really good idea that we want to share and we let someone else finish speaking first, we’re showing self-control.
I wonder if you can think of any other examples?
Bible Link
Showing self-control can be hard. When we find it difficult to make the right choice, we might call it temptation or being tempted.
Even Jesus was tempted. Matthew writes about it in his Gospel:
Then the Spirit led Jesus into the desert to be tempted by the devil. Jesus ate nothing for 40 days and nights. After this, he was very hungry. The devil came to Jesus to tempt him. The devil said, “If you are the Son of God, tell these rocks to become bread.”
Jesus answered, “It is written in the Scriptures, ‘A person does not live only by eating bread. But a person lives by everything the Lord says.’”
Then the devil led Jesus to the holy city of Jerusalem. He put Jesus on a very high place of the Temple. The devil said, “If you are the Son of God, jump off. It is written in the Scriptures,
‘He put his angels in charge of you.
They will catch you with their hands.
And you will not hit your foot on a rock.’”
Jesus answered him, “It also says in the Scriptures, ‘Do not test the Lord your God.’”
Then the devil led Jesus to the top of a very high mountain. He showed Jesus all the kingdoms of the world and all the great things that are in those kingdoms. The devil said, “If you will bow down and worship me, I will give you all these things.”
Jesus said to the devil, “Go away from me, Satan! It is written in the Scriptures, ‘You must worship the Lord your God. Serve only him!”
So the devil left Jesus.
(Matthew 4.1-11)
The devil tempted Jesus three times. Each time, Jesus showed self-control by refusing to do what the devil said.
Can you identify the three parts of the story where the devil tempted Jesus?
Can you think of a time when you have been tempted? Did you make the right choice? Do you always make the right choice (I don’t; sometimes I get it wrong)?
Prayer
Dear God,
When we are tempted, help to us to make the right choices and to show self-control.
Amen.
