Autumn 1 - Week 3

Monday 21st September

Good Morning Cathedral School,

It is Mrs Scott here with you this morning. I hope you have had a good weekend.

This week we are going to carry on thinking about our school values. They are known by Christians as the ‘Fruits of the Spirit’. At school we call them the Fruits of Friendship with God.

Which fruit we are looking at today?

Can you sort these things according to rough and smooth objects?

Can you think of your own examples?

If you touch rough objects they might hurt your fingers, smooths objects can make you feel good. Sometimes words can be smooth or rough.

Can you sort these words?

How can rough words make people feel?

How can smooth words make people feel?

Can you think of some examples of smooth words people have said to you. What impact did the words have on you?

Gentleness is a fruit we all need to grow. Anyone can be unkind; it is harder to be gentle with someone.

Amen

I hope you have a wonderful day.

Tuesday 22nd September

Good Morning Cathedral School. This week will are continuing to think about the Fruits of Friendship with God. Can you remember which ones we have looked at so far?

Today we are thinking about ...

There are lots of different ways to show that you love and care about others.

Here are a few things that children at Cathedral School have said in the past:

  • Tell someone you love them!

  • Make something for them.

  • Show through an action - perhaps helping them with something.

  • Spend time with them.

  • Tell someone that you care about them.

Parables

You could think about how to show people you care about them in school and at home.

Prayers

Dear God,

Help us to show love to others by giving them the time we would rather have to ourselves, by giving them help when we would rather be playing and by showing our love in what we say and do.

Amen.

Lord's Prayer

Please join in saying the Lord's Prayer together.

I hope you have a lovely day.

Wednesday 23rd September

Good Morning Cathedral School.

This is a photograph of a sheep dog herding sheep. It is the sheep dog's job to follow the shepherd's commands in order to round up the sheep.

Here are some commands a farmer might use:

A clap = one step to the right

A whistle = one step to the left

A stamp = one step forward

A click of the fingers = one step back

Work with a partner, take it in turns to be the shepherd and the sheep dog. You'll have to pretend your finger is the sheep dog, otherwise everyone will be bumping into each other!!!

Were you able to follow commands?

Can you guess which Fruit of Friendship with God we are thinking about today?

Sheep dogs are under the control of the shepherd. They follow the shepherd's commands. The Bible says that one of the results of friendship with God is self-control. That means that you stop yourself doing wrong things without being made to and that you choose to do the right thing on your own.

Think about a time when you have shown self-control and made the right choice without being told to do so.

Thursday 22nd September

Good Morning Cathedral School. It's Father David with you this morning. This week are thinking about how Jesus helps his friends, and asking ourselves how we, as Jesus’s friends are helped by him, and how we can show that we are Jesus’s friends by helping each other.

Jesus teaches us to be loyal to each other (Luke 22:28-29)

In this Bible passage, Jesus is thanking his friends, the disciples, for being loyal to him throughout the time he has spent with them around Jerusalem and Galilee. This passage comes just before Jesus is arrested, so loyalty is about to become very important!

I wonder what you think loyalty to your friends means? It’s a funny word, and a lot of the time I’m sure we each like to think that we are loyal friends! But of course, like the disciples do when Jesus is arrested, sometimes we turn our backs on our friends, and aren’t as loyal as we could be.

What does loyalty mean to you?

How does Jesus teach us to be loyal?

Well, I like to think that the word ‘loyal’ is a bit like the word ‘faithful’. They sort of mean the same thing: sticking with something, not giving up even when it is difficult. You might think of some other ways to describe what being faithful means!

But for me, being faithful means that I am making a serious promise to stay true to something I believe in. That might mean that I am faithful to Christ, as we say in our baptisms, or it might mean that I am going to stay true to my friends, just as Jesus did, and just as Jesus asked his friends 2000 years ago, and does now. That is a very powerful thing for a friendship because you are saying to your friends that “I believe in you”.

Think About...

Sometimes our friends are having really difficult times, and it might not show straight away, but being a loyal, or faithful friend, means that no matter how hard things get we can always say to the people we care about “I believe in you”. Imagine how powerful that might be to one of your friends who is struggling. Imagine how powerful you might find that if someone said it to you.

So this week, please think about the different ways we can be loyal, or faithful, to our friends. Think about the different ways we can way to someone “I believe in you” - it doesn’t always have to be words; there are lots of ways to show that we believe in, and are loyal to our friends.

Talk to a partner about this.
