Autumn 1 - Week 4

Monday 28th September

Good Morning Cathedral School,

It is Mrs Scott here with you this morning. I hope you have had a good weekend.

This week we are going to carry on thinking about our school values. They are known by Christians as the ‘Fruits of the Spirit’. At school we call them the Fruits of Friendship with God.

Which fruit we are looking at today?

Today we will be thinking about peace.

Peace can be defined as contentment or unity between people.

How would you describe it?

This is the story about a man called Elisha who wanted real peace.

Think About ...

Many people think that peace only means there is no fighting going on. Christians believe peace is much more than that, it is when everything is right between people. Elisha not only stopped the fighting but he made the kings better friends.

Have you ever had a falling-out with a friend or family member?

How did you sort it out?

Did anyone help you?

What did you learn from it?

Reflection Time

This week we will continue to listen to parts of The Planets by Gustav Holst.

Which planet has been your favourite so far?

Today we are listening to Uranus.

Prayer

Dear God,

Help us to work for peace in our friendships, not just to stop fighting but to make those friendships truly peaceful.

Amen

I hope you have a wonderful day.

Tuesday 29th September

Good Morning Cathedral School. This week will are continuing to think about the Fruits of Friendship with God. Can you remember which ones we have looked at so far?

Today we are thinking about ...

Definition: Generous and open-hearted.

Can you think of some ways that people have been generous or open-hearted with you at school and at home?

When people are generous, how does it make you feel?

In the past children have said the following:

  • My mum gives me lots of her time.

  • My friends always include me in their games.

  • My dad helps me with my homework.

  • My teacher and TA do extra work with me if I don't understand something.

  • My friends show me the right way to behave.

  • My cousin sets a good example for me.

  • My friends are kind to me.

How have you displayed goodness in the past?

How could you be generous and open hearted today?

Bible Link

Surely your goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever. - Psalms 23:6

Reflection Time

This week we will continue to listen to parts of The Planets by Gustav Holst.

Today we are listening to Neptune.

Amen.

Please join in saying the Lord's Prayer together.

I hope you have a lovely day.

Wednesday 30th September

Good Morning Cathedral School.

Which Fruit of Friendship with God is left?

Please read the presentation on Greyfriars’ Bobby. This story is about a dog who embodied this quality.

Greyfriars Bobby.ppt

Think About...

The little dog, Bobby, showed great faithfulness to his master, John. On Bobby’s memorial are the words, ‘Let his loyalty and devotion be a lesson to us all’. That means we can learn from the example of the little dog; to be faithful and loyal. Christians believe they should be faithful to God even if it gets them into trouble, even if they get laughed at or teased.

Can you think of times that you have been faithful or when someone has been faithful to you?

Reflection Time

Prayer

Heavenly Father,

May we learn to be faithful to you and to the people we love and not to let them down as soon as things get difficult.

Amen

Thursday 1st October

Good morning, Cathedral School. It’s Father Michael with you for Collective Worship today. I hope you are settling into your new classes and it is wonderful to have you all back at Cathedral School. We’ve really missed you over the summer and I’m sure you have enjoyed meeting your friends and the staff once again.

We are thinking this term about how Jesus helps his friends.

St John’s Gospel Chapter 15 verses 12-15

Jesus said to his disciples,

This is my command: Love each other as I have loved you. The greatest love a person can show is to die for his friends. You are my friends if you do what I command you. I don’t call you servants now. A servant does not know what his master is doing. But now I call you friends because I have made known to you everything I heard from my Father.

What makes a good friend?

Jesus gathered a group of friends around him called disciples. They shared their life together, the good and happy times as well as the sad and difficult times. Sometimes the disciples were good at being Jesus’ friends and other times they failed him. Jesus never stopped loving them.

What do you think makes a good friend? After you have had chance to think about it talk with your partner and see if they have similar or different ideas to yours.

Jesus was sharing a new command with his friends, and with us today, Love each other as I have loved you.

I wonder how we can put Jesus’ words into practice today?

Have a think for a minute or two.

It might be the way we share with one another, help a friend who is finding something difficult, playing with someone who is on their own and feeling lonely, sharing one of our smiles with someone who looks sad.

What might you do?

Reflection Time

During this time we will listen to John Rutter’s song, Deep Peace of the Running Wave to You. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Eve2y-P-Zjk

As you listen to the music, think about how Jesus calls each one of us by name and asks us to be his friends. Think about how we might be a kinder friend to others today.

Prayer

Loving God,

Thank you for all you have given us in our friend Jesus.

Help us to be loving and kind to everyone we meet today.

Amen.
