Summer 1 - Week 3

Tuesday 4th May

Good Morning Cathedral School,

I hope you have a lovely Bank Holiday Weekend.

This week we are continuing our collective worship theme of 'Fun and Games'. Today we are thinking about jelly babies!

Jogging

Put your hand up if you sometimes go jogging or if you know someone who likes to jog or run?

What sort or things do you need if you are going jogging or running?

The picture might give you some clues.

Marathon Running

What is a marathon? Do you know some who has taken part in one?

A marathon is a long-distance race. One of the most famous marathons takes part here in London. Runners need to run 26.2 miles in order to complete the course. Do you know anyone who has taken part?

Sometimes people run races or take part in events for charity. Runners oftern say that it is hard to keep going. Usually friends stand at the side of the course and cheer the runners on, other people hand them water or jelly babies to keep them going. The jelly babies are full of sugar and give the runners short bursts of energy.

Living your life well can sometimes feel as difficult as a long run. It might be tempting to give up on doing the right thing and just settle for doing the easy thing instead. This is when we need to support each other - like the friends who shout encouragement and hand out jelly babies.

Bible Link

Strengthen those people whose hands and knees shake with tiredness. Encourage those who feel like giving up.

Isaiah 35;3

Reflection Time

Think about a time about someone might have encouraged you when you needed it or perhaps think about how you could encourage others today.

Prayer

Dear Lord,

As we travel through life, help us to encourage each other to keep going, to keep living well, to keep putting faith into action in daily life.

Amen

Wednesday 5th May

Good Morning Everyone.

I have seen the golden sunshine

Hymn

Please sing this cheerful hymn. Hopefully the weather will continue to be sunny today.

Tiddlywinks

Today is our last 'fun and games' collective worship.

Have you ever played tiddlywinks? Can you explain the rules to a partner?

It is a very simle game. You have to press down with one counter to make the other one flick into the pot. The person with the most counters in the pot is the winner.

The problem is......the counters don't always go in the direction you expect!

In life there might be certain things we want to do, but life does not always go as planned and sometimes we end up going in a different direction, just like the tiddlywinks! Christians believe that God is with them whatever happens. In the Bible it says that God is with people wherever they go.

"Lord you are my safe place; guide me in the way you want me to go." (Psalm 31:3)

"When you pass through deep waters of difficulty I will be with you. When you go through times of great troubles they will not overcome you." (Isaiah 43:2)

"I will be with you always, even to the end of the world" (Matthew 28:20)

Prayer

Dear God,

We thank you for times when life goes well. Please be with us when life goes off plan and help us to learn what we can in the situation, knowing you are there with us.

Amen

Thursday 6th May

It’s Revd Lisa here. I hope you have had a good week so far.

This term, we’re revisiting the Fruits of Friendship with God.

Today, we’re going to be thinking about goodness.

Goodness

I think we talk a lot about ‘being good’ or ‘making good choices’ or ‘having a good day’ but we don’t talk about goodness quite as much, so I thought I’d start today with the bit of the word ‘goodness’ that I’m familiar with – that is, ‘good’.

I wonder what you are good at?

We’re all good at something. In your class, there might be lots of different things that people are good at. Today, I want to use the example of a good runner. Perhaps someone in your class is a good runner.

What makes someone a good runner?

Maybe they’re a good runner because they’re really fast, or because the way they run – their technique – is right, or because they have the right attitude to running, or because they’ve watched other good runners and followed their example.

We don’t show goodness by being good runners (or being good at doing any thing). We show goodness by being good people. I think a good runner can help us to understand what it means to a good person, to show goodness. We don’t have to be really fast, but the way we act is important, our attitude is important, and following the example of others is important too.

Something to think about

I wonder if there’s anyone who you think shows goodness?

What is it about their actions or attitude that makes them a good example?

Do you find it easy to show goodness?

Bible Link

Being a good person, showing goodness, can be really hard (and none of us manage it 100% of the time)! I think sometimes we make it more complicated than it needs to be, though. I find this Bible verse really helps me to understand what goodness means, especially when I’m struggling:

‘The Lord has told you what is good. He has told you what he wants from you: Do what is right to other people. Love being kind to others. And live humbly, trusting your God.’ (Micah 6:8)

What do you think you can do today that will show goodness?

Prayer

Dear God,

Be with us as we try to show goodness to others:

rejoice with us when we succeed and, when we get it wrong, give us the courage to try to put it right.

Amen.
