Spring 1 - Week 2
Monday 10th January
Good Morning Cathedral School, I hope you had a good weekend. Have you managed to keep your New Year's resolutions so far?
Hymn
This hymn will give you a clue to our theme for the next few weeks.
That's right! Our theme is 'love'.
People often associate hearts with the concept of love. If we were all in the hall, I would ask a few children to come to the front and draw some hearts. I would also ask you all to draw a heart shape on your hand or make a heart shape with your fingers. Could you do one of those things now?
What do you think love is? It is one of those words that can mean many different things. In other languages there are often many words for love, but we have only one. Do you know any words that me 'love' in other languages?
What do the following sentences mean:
I love chocolate.
My family love me.
I love to go swimming.
Can you change the sentences and use a different word instead of 'love'.
Do the sentences still mean the same thing?
For the next two weeks we shall be looking at how the Bible describees love. The word love has so many meanings that it is like a parcel with many layers of wrapping paper - the type you use for pass the parcel. Each day we will unpack a little more of the meaning of the word love.
Prayer
Dear God,
May we be more loving in what we say, in what we do and in what we think about others.
Amen
I hope you have a wonderful day.
Tuesday 11th January
Hymn
Who is your favourite super hero?
Why are they your favourite? What is their super-power?
Love Makes Ordinary People Great
St. Paul wrote about what makes people special. He said that love makes ordinary people great.
"If I can speak every language in heaven and on earth but have no love, I am like a noisy gong or bell. If I am very clever and understand everything in the universe but have no love, I am nothing. If I can do miracles and great deeds of bravery but have no love, it does me no good at all. "
Christians believe that you do not need any qualifications for love except a loving heart. You do not have to be wealthy or brave or clever, just loving.
Think about the people that you love and the people that love you
Prayer
Dear God,
Thank you that love is one skill everyone can develop. Help us to put it into practice.
Amen
I hope you have a wonderful day.
Wednesday January 12th
Hymn
Please sing this hymn, you could add some actions if you would like to.
Love is Patient
What does patient mean?
When might you need to be patient?
Patience is enjoying today and not wasting the time you have because you always want to rush on to the next thing. Love is also patient with other people, not trying to rush them onto the next thing. Love lets people go at their own pace.
Can you think of a time that someone you love has been patient with you or perhaps you have been patient with someone you love?
Prayer
Dear God,
Thank you for all the time you give us. May we enjoy all of it and not wish our time away.
Please help us to be patient with the people we love.
Amen
I hope you have a wonderful day.
Thursday 13th January
Good Morning Cathedral School.
Its Canon Wendy here today.
This term we are going to be looking at stories of hope from the Bible and I want to tell you about some of the stories involving women which I find especially hopeful. Today we are going to think about Lydia the purple cloth maker.
Hymn
But before we do, I thought you might like to listen to and maybe sing along with this song which is called ‘My God is so big, so strong and so wonderful’. I really like the singing and the pictures in this one.
I like this song because it helps me to remember that God is so big that there is nothing that God cannot do. It makes me remember how good God is to us all.
Can you think of anything that has happened to you that makes you remember how great and big God is? Perhaps something happened to make you very happy or someone was very kind to you?
Lydia
Today I want to tell you the story of Lydia. She doesn’t feature in the Bible very much. She is mentioned in just a few Bible verses. (You can read about her in Acts chapter 16 verses 11-15 and then again in verse 40.)
The Acts of the Apostles tells us lots of things about the early church and how it grew. In this story Paul was in Philippi. Paul is very famous for travelling around telling people about God and his Son, Jesus.
Paul and his companions went to talk where the Jews went to pray. Women met there too and one of them was Lydia. She was rich because of the work that she did making and selling purple cloth.
What do you think you might like to do when you grow up and go to works?
Why would you like to do this?
Here is a picture of what the cloth might have looked like.
What do you think they might have made with this beautiful cloth?
What would you like to make from it?
Purple cloth was very expensive and people liked to own it and have clothes and other things made from it.
Lydia listened to all that Paul had to say and decided to join the community and so she was baptised. All her family and those who worked for her were baptised with her.
Straight away she invited Paul and those who were travelling with her to go and stay with her and they did so. Just after this, Paul was sent to prison for the work he was doing and even after that he went back and stayed with Lydia.
I think that this is a story of hope because it shows us that everyone is important in God’s eyes and that we can all be followers of Jesus.
I really like stories where the women in Jesus’ time and in the early church are given a clear place as it reminds us that male and female are equally important to God.
Prayer
Creator God,
We thank you that you created us and care for us all.
Help us to treat each other with love and care
and to show that we know that God loves us all equally.
We know that you love and want the best for us.
Help us to help others to know that too.
Amen
