Summer 1 - Week 4

Monday 10th May

Good Morning Cathedral School,

I hope you have a lovely weekend. On Saturday it was VE Day. Did you do anything to celebrate it?

Please read the presentation to find out more.

Tuesday 8 May, 1945, was an emotional day that millions of people had been waiting for.

Many people were extremely happy that the fighting had stopped and there were big celebrations and street parties.

Many people also attended church services to thank God for the victory.

London's St Paul's Cathedral held 10 services, which were attended by thousands of people.

But VE Day was also a moment of great sadness and reflection, as millions of people had lost their lives or loved ones in the conflict.

Bible Link

Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful.

Colossians 3:15

Tuesday 11th May

Good Morning Everyone.

Do you know what this building is called?

Some of you might have been to visit it?

We are going to be thinking about the person that built it today.

A man for all the people

The Sydney Opera House is a huge concert venue on the banks of Sydney Harbour, close to the famous Sydney Harbour Bridge.

It was opened by Queen Elizabeth II, in 1973.

Usually, more than 3,000 events are held at the Sydney Opera House each year, including operas, concerts and festivals.

- There are about 1,000 rooms in the Sydney Opera House in total, including offices, restaurants and the concert venues.

- Nearly one million tiles cover the roof.

- The Sydney Opera House was designed by a man called Jørn Utzon, who beat 232 other entrants in the competition to design it. He lived in Denmark and had neer been to Australia.

While the building work was being carried out, problems started emerging. Mr Utzon disagreed with other people who were involved in the project about the way that they should finish the design. In the end, he was so cross about the changes that they wanted to make that he left Australia and moved back to Denmark!

The building work continued until it was completed, so people can enjoy Mr Utzon’s design for the Sydney Opera House today. However, Mr Utzon himself never went back to see the finished building!

Can you imagine designing something as famous as the Sydney Opera House, but never actually seeing it for yourself; all because of an argument!

A long time after the building had been completed, the owners of the Sydney Opera House made amends with the architect and everyone apologised for the problems that they had caused. They even involved Mr Utzon in helping to make new developments and changes to the Sydney Opera House, but he was very old by then, so he was never able to return to Australia to see his finished design.

When we fall out with our friends, brothers or sisters, it can be hard to be the first person to say sorry, especially if we think that they have done something to hurt us. However, in fact, saying sorry quickly can really help to solve a problem and stop it growing out of control.

Can you think of a time when we could have said sorry straightaway so that an argument would have ended much sooner than it did?

Is there someone we need to say sorry to today?

Try to remember today's story about the Sydney Opera House so that next time we have a problem to solve, we fix it quickly.

Prayer

Dear God,

Thank you that the Bible tells us that you will forgive us when we do something wrong.

Please help us to remember to solve problems quickly by saying sorry and forgiving other people when they upset or hurt us.

Please help us to care for others and help them in any way we can.

Amen

Wednesday 12th May

Cross over the road.ppt

Tomorrow is Ascension Day. We will think about it today as tomorrow Canon Wendy will be leading our collective worship.

Did you know that the word 'goodbye' originally meant 'God be with you'.

Do you know how to say goodbye in another language?

We do not always want to say goodbye because we know we will soon see our friends again. When we are going to see our friends again we say "See you soon" or "See you later". Here are some other ways of saying goodbye which are not quite so final:

Swahili: Kwa Heri ya Kuonana - Goodbye until we meet

Spanish: Hasta luego - Until we meet again

German: Auf Wiedersehen - See you again

French - Au revoir - Until we see each other again

Italian: Arrivederci - See you again

Can you think of any others?

Ascension Day

This is what Christians think about on Ascension Day:

When Jesus vanished from their sight in the cloud the disciples stood there staring upwards. Two men in white, who had not been there before, asked them why they were standing there staring. The disciples explained what had happened. The two men told them they should not be sad because Jesus would one day return. It was not a final goodbye.

The disciples understood that they had not really said goodbye to Jesus, it was more like 'au revoir' or 'see you again'. One day he would come back. Christians believe that one day Jesus will return, not as a baby but as a king.

Prayer

Dear God,

Thank you for the hope that one day Jesus will return.

Amen.

Thursday 13th May

Today our worship will be led by Canon Wendy.

"But the Spirit produces love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, humility, and self-control. There is no law against such things as these. And those who belong to Christ Jesus have put to death their human nature with all its passions and desires. The Spirit has given us life; he must also control our lives. We must not be proud or irritate one another or be jealous of one another."

Galatians 5: 22-26

First, let’s listen to a song about ‘The Fruits of the Spirit’.

Patience

Good morning Cathedral School! It is quite a long time now since I have been with you and it is good to say hello again. It’s a long time too since I have been able to be with you actually at Cathedral School. I seem to remember though that you had the ‘Fruits of the Spirit on the wall’ somewhere. Anyway, today I am going to talk to you about one of the ‘Fruits of the Spirit’ – patience.

Now, I think that I was given this fruit to talk about because people know that I am not very patient. I always want things to happen immediately and have no patience when something goes wrong, or someone does things more slowly than I want it done. I do find it very hard to keep quiet and not complain.

So, I try hard to remember that we are all very different and that we do things in different ways and at different speeds. God loves us all and wants us all to be patient with each other and kind to each other. God has given us the Holy Spirit to help us to live in the way that God wants us to. So, when we feel that someone is irritating us or is going too slowly and we can’t be patient with them, then it is good to pray for God’s help to be gentle and kind and to wait patiently for them. Sometimes, it is good to help someone who is doing things slowly – that is if they would like our help. Perhaps you can think of some people who have helped you. Say thank you to God for them.

Think about

Now try to think about times when people annoy you because they are slower than you are. Think about what you can do to help you to be more patient and kind. Would they like you to help them?

Prayer

Loving God,

We ask you to help us when we are feeling impatient with people and with things that are going on around us. Please send your Holy Spirit into our lives to help us to be able to be patient and kind to those around us who make us cross. Help us not to be cross but to be kind and help them.

Amen.
